mildly bemused Jackson Martínez being paraded before the cameras at Guangzhou Evergrande Taobao following his £31m move from Atlético Madrid, part-owned by the Chinese billionaire Wang Jianlin. A gurning Sergio Agüero squeezing between David Cameron and the Chinese president, Xi Jingping, for a selfie on a tour of Manchester City's training ground that presaged a £265m investment in the club.
The graph that shows the £38.4m spent by Jiangsu Suning on the Brazilian midfielder Alex Teixeira, breaking the transfer record for the third time in 10 days and sending total investment by the Chinese Super League soaring past that of the Premier League, in a transfer window that does not close until the end of the month.

Chinese investment funds are targeting stakes in European clubs, from City to Atlético and Slavia Prague, while media and technology companies pour cash into building a sports economy and strengthening a domestic league until recently riddled with corruption and controversy.

I don't see these recent big transfers changing Chinese football much. China needs a culture shift amongst its young people too prioritise soccer over other activities and realise it's a potential career. It also needs the network of youth clubs and academies which have been in Europe/SA for decades in order to develop any young talent.
Buying a few established world class players will do zilch.

Which is what the article sort of states..
Investors are also being urged to put money into building networks of coaching academies across the vast country, turbocharging investment in facilities and coaching. The plan also ties in with wider societal aims and, perhaps belated, concerns that driving Chinese teenagers to ever greater academic heights is taking its toll on their mental health.
Chadwick says: “These players going to China is about building a fan culture, they will improve the level of competence. What is also interesting is what the Chinese government and the provincial authorities are trying to do is to build sport campuses in all the major cities. The Chinese like the Manchester City model, with the Etihad campus and so on. It’s no surprise that’s where they’ve chosen to invest.”
They clearly have a plan in place, whether they have to will to see it through and are able to is the more logical question.

I think it is that attitude that will see China come to the fore. Write them off at your peril. You don't seem to realise that signing star players is what attracts people to football and encourages them to play themselves.

people have been saying the exact same thing about USA for the last decade. They say similar things about India periodically too. It will never happen.

The great windfall of China: a football revolution that may lead to World Cup
Perhaps the more appropriate headline would be :
The great windfall of China: a football revolution that may lead to World Cup particpation.
Since there is no history of football in China, their only hope of participation would be to host the world cup finals.

Considering the political will seems to be there, I don't see how it can fail as they seem to be covering all bases. That being said predicting China's long term future in any regard is futile.

Part of me actually sees it as something good for football as a whole and one of the most exciting things to happen in global football for a while. Football has become too Euro-centric were all of the world best players head over here, sucking talent from everywhere with the ocassional player like Aboutrika resisting temptations. It'd be nice for talent to be dispersed, even the Club World Cup would matter a bit more. It could likely have a knock on effect for other Asian leagues as their Champions League standards would rise.
With that being said...
The investment planned is a mind-boggling $850bn in the next decade.
Fuck me, there are more important things they could invest in like the rural and Eastern parts of their country if this is largely state sanctioned money..

What a load of old tut.
So far we have seen a Chelsea reserve midfielder sign for 25m and Jackson Martinez, a player who scored 3 goals in 25 games for Athletico sign for more than they paid for him. At the press conference the other day Teixera seemed underwhelmed and was suggesting that he would be looking for his next move in the near future as he wont break into the Brazil team whilst in China.
In the emantime names such a Rooney have been bandied about along with Van Persie. They players have one thing in common in that they are nearing the end of their careers.
And China may get a World Cup. So did South Korea, South Africa etc and it didn't change very much in the football cultire of those countries did it.
So what will happen is that the best young players will be snapped up by Barcelona etc as players want the prestige that comes with playing for big clubs with tradition whilst earning loads of money and playing in the Champions League etc.
All China will end up doing is competing with the US as a retirement home for old p,Akers and a destination for players who couldn't quite hack it in the more competitive leagues.
