Sri Lanka has granted permission for China to build a vast “port city” in the island’s capital, despite concerns the ambitious project could be an environmental disaster.

President Maithripala Sirisena had suspended the contentious $1.4bn plan to build on reclaimed land next to Colombo’s main harbour shortly after taking power in January last year.

Your knowledge of history is wrong. The whole Indian sub-continent has been part of the British Empire for centuries and the British have every right to tell the Chinese to get out.

No strong country does anything for other countries for free, because of the goodness of their hearts. Romans built roads and bridges to transfer armies and goods. Chinese build roads in Africa for regional influence and to transfer goods.

After reading the article, I am not sure the author has explained why this "port city" is so controversial. There are plenty examples of cities with large/high density population utilizing land reclamation. What's so controversial about it?

We are doing the same with giving them billions of tax payers money and vastly over paying them to build our nuclear power stations. And we all know how safe chinese construction is and their p iss weak steel they will put into it.
