Silicon Valley companies are shying away from selling cyberwarfare services to the Pentagon to avoid jeopardising their relationship with the Chinese market, a leading geopolitical strategist has suggested.

Peter Singer, an author and senior fellow at the New America Foundation thinktank, said the United States and China are engaged in a new cold war – being fought partly in cyberspace – that “could turn hot”.

Known tactics in this new cold war include Chinese cyber-spies stealing secrets relating to the US military’s F-35 stealth jet to build a clone warplane.

Meanwhile, China has complained that the US takes advantage of its power to “unscrupulously monitor other countries” under the pretense of fighting terrorism.

China’s hi-tech military capabilities – including the world’s fastest supercomputer, a soon-to-launch “unhackable” quantum communications satellite, a hypersonic weapons programme and armed ground robotics – have left the United States trying to play catch-up, Singer explained during a talk at the RSA security conference in San Francisco.

“In the past the government led the way with innovation and industry followed,” said Singer, citing the Arpanet, a precursor to the internet, as an example.

“Now it’s the private sector – as seen in the debate over encryption. This is changing the way that government leaders talk – the tone alternates between asking for help and threatening.”

In order to modernise national security operations, the US Department of Defense has been trying to woo Silicon Valley, with the Pentagon setting aside $18bn to invest in next-generation technologies including guided munitions, electronic warfare and robotics.

“The Secretary of Defence [Ash] Carter has come to Silicon Valley more times than he’s gone to war zones like Iraq and Afghanistan,” Singer said.

You're totally brainwashed or ignorant stating creativity comes only from democracies. Throughout humanity's history, most important innovations were not achieved by democracies. So go get yourself learning.

And the fact that the Chinese can hack into top US military secrets, get the design blue-prints and reverse-engineer the hardware and softwares, says more about Chinese capability and the wider strategic implications than the end product itself.

glimoma90

It's profits or more profits. It's false and misleading to say the choices are freedom and profits.

Good, keep thinking that the Chinese is that stupid to not realise the "design flaws" when even you can identify it.

glioma90

I'm not angry about the Chinese copying it. Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake. I'm angry the US govt continues to pour money into such a terrible program.

If Chinese really did copy it, then you have nothing to complain about. When it comes to war (and the F-35 is a warplane after all) everything is fair game, and that includes - and must include - military espionage. Every country has to protect their military secret, so stop whining if you make it so easy for your military secrets to be stolen.

They'll move. Honest. This idea that America is 'free' and China 'not free' is actually ludicrous. There are significant cultural differences between China and the US which influence how their societies are organized but the notion that China is a giant prison camp full of impoverished, enslaved, masses is just ridiculous. They're not the 'enemy', either -- they're a competing nation, one that's big enough to take us on and win if we don't watch out. Two things you need to bear in mind are..... -- The Chinese middle classes are starting to enjoy levels of prosperity once reserved for the Americans. (They tend to think of their relatives in the US as the 'poor relations'.)
-- As soon as the Chinese make any money they're looking for real estate or other toeholds in the West with Canada and the US being favored. Also, if you still think they're a bunch of coolies only capable of copying stuff just remember that's how we once regarded the Japanese. They're different but they're easily as smart as we are and there's a lot of them. (Incidentally, re the F-35 -- some would suggest that if we wanted to seriously damage the Chinese defense forces we'd just give 'em the blueprints and encourage them to invest their efforts in building some.)

Ahh....you've been living in a parallel universe, I see. Have a look at your stuff to see how much is 100% American sourced. I'd guess that unless you were writing your CiF comments on a computer made in the 1980s (which wouldn't work....) then you own quite a bit of Chinese made stuff. Its the way the world works these days.

You live in a really small well. From biomedical breakthroughs like the genetic engineering (the CASPR technique, the creation of human sperm from embryonic stem cells), to military (e.g. hypersonic glide vehicle, carrier killer missiles) to space technology (e.g. quantum communication satellite, dark matter detector satellite, the second space station, the largest terrestrial radiotelescope), to information technologies (e.g. the world's fastest supercomputer), to transport technologies (e.g. high speed rail, Maglev), to social media (e.g. WeChat) to green technologies to robotics, China has been ahead of the West. Is it as a whole more innovative than the West? Not yet, but with the speed it is closing the gap, only people as naive as you will sit on their laurels and think that only the West can innovate and underestimate the Chinese capability to do the same, and maybe do it even better especially with a whole generation of graduates who return from studying - and topping their class - in MIT and Harvard and Oxbridge. Remember the story of the hare and the tortoise, except that China is much faster and cleverer than the tortoise here. Get out of your little well

In the end these Tech companies are going to have to ..choose either Profits or Freedom ...in today's China you cannot have both and in tomorrow's AMerica they will be asked to cooperate or move ...to China ..In the end The tech Companies cannot have their cake and eat it to ..

It would amaze me if China could invent something of their own ..You know create their own stuff ....Seems like Dictatorships like governments have real problems with BASIC creativity ..They resort to stealing ideas from creative Nations ....I would be real interesting for a western Nation to design something so bad and push it so hard that a government like China or Russia steal the plans for it build it and find what they have is junk .. Now that would be the ultimate buyer beware scenario.... Oh the heads that would roll .... Be good for a chuckle from the West ..
