China has reportedly stationed up to five ships around a disputed atoll in the South China Sea, preventing Filipino fishing vessels from accessing traditional fishing grounds.

In a move that is likely to raise tensions in the disputed Spratly region, the Philippine Star newspaper said China began deploying ships to Quirino Atoll, also known as Jackson Atoll, after a fishing vessel recently ran aground in the area. It quoted unidentified Filipino fishermen and officials in the area.

If you want to go back in History to validate your ownership of certain islands then you should be aware that Mongolia, Russia, Turkmenistan, Tibet and many other bordering countries should also reclaim much of what is now regarded as Chinese territory by the Chinese. Perhaps the members of the Chinese government should consult the maps and charts of the Spratley island area to see exactly which sovereign country is closest, China comes well down the list so by geographic standards China has no right to claim anything in this region.

The story is based on a Google Earth image they found on the internet. But let's say that's the only testing China did. It would be similar to our testing of interceptors where everything is choreographed ahead of time in order to achieve a successful hit. Unfortunately, if we fail to hit an incoming warhead, we lose a city, but if a Chinese missile misses its target, they just launch another one until they score a hit.

Then it is up to the West to facilitate a face-saving compromise. Obviously, shouting to China that they are behaving like idiots and should get out of the contested areas immediately is probably not the best way to initiate this. Fortunately, most of this belliocosity comes from the armchair generals on forums like this and the offices of the less reputable journalists. I'm sure that, behind the scenes, all the right noises are being made by the professionals in China and from the neutrals. The Guardian reports seem informative, measured and sensible, most of the complaints against them come from the juveniles employed to exert pre-emptive pressure in favour of any Chinese discussions. I'm staggered that anybody in the Chinese Propaganda Ministry - or whatever it is called - still thinks such a strategy has the slightest positive effect. The presence of such idiots must make running China much more difficult.

Sorry gluck. You do know just how many land borders China has? Yes, a very big number. Only two have disputes. All the rest are settled. It was an Indian poster last year who mention India has disputes with many countries, and interference across borders being an issue. Not just Pakistan, China and Nepal. He said it was because of the historic British Empire border bequeathed to India to sort out.
