The “year of the monkey” dawned recently in China– and with it, a trendy new exotic pet. Pygmy marmosets are all the rage among China’s wealthy elite, who are forgoing legality and snapping up baby monkeys at around $4,500 (£3,200) each. The internet has exploded with photos of the so-called “thumb monkeys,” while conservationists and primate scientists are lamenting the situation.

Weighing in at just over 100 grams (equivalent to about 20 US nickels), pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea) are the world’s smallest monkeys. They’re native to the rainforests of South America’s western Amazon Basin, where they live in small groups of around a dozen individuals. They aren’t considered threatened because of their large range and relative prence, but they are in decline, according to the IUCN, primarily due to the pet trade.

Not all of China’s “thumb monkeys” are imported, Shanee said, and China may have established domestic breeding stock. However, these marmosets also stand little chance of survival, as the people who buy them often do not have the ability or knowledge to adequately care for them.

In their home country in Amazon of Brazil it is illegal for wildlife to be kept as pets. Poor things ending up as status pets in China, they all end up dying . This country needs to change its medi mindset regarding respect for animals.

"20 US nickels"? Never seen one so this isn't much help!

Friends, I will share with you the most terrifying experience of my life. The first and last time I visited China, while in Beijing exploring the city, I stumbled across a building easily the size of a stadium. My curiosity was piqued due to the wailing and crying from inside the building so I investigated the source of the sounds, and what I saw was beyond words. In this gargantuan building, cages were everywhere jam packed with every imaginable animal from the four corners of the Earth- monkeys, turtles, dogs, cats, bears, snakes, lizards, deer, frogs, chimps, a virtual Noah's Arc, but not for salvation. All of these innocent animals were being butchered for exotic food or "medicine". My God, I thought I was experiencing Hell. The suffering of these animals, the blood, the crying was beyond anything you can possibly imagine, and the traders and buyers could care less. The only concern was MONEY. Now, I am not an emotional person, but I was so shocked and horrified that I broke down. I subsequently returned to my hotel room and I never left for one week until it was time to leave the country. I continue to have nightmares over this and my faith in humanity has been decimated. I ask you, what can we do to stop this insanity? The politicians don't seem to care so what do we do or is it hopeless already? This quote from the movie The Matrix seems to sum things up nicely: "I would like to share a revelation I had during my time among the human race. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you are not true mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium- a symbiotic relationship- with the surrounding environment, but you humans do not. You move to an area and replicate without any natural limits to population growth until every natural resource is consumed and all other life is extinguished. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same destructive pattern- a virus. Human beings are a pernicious disease- a metastasizing cancer on Mother Earth. You are a plague and we are the cure."

Could you please explain where this horrendous stadium sized all species meat market is in Beijing? You see I live in Beijing (best part of a decade and travelled all over the city) and have never heard of it. Nor has the head of a foreign animal rights NGO based in Beijing who is a friend of mine.
He really wants this information so he can investigate. That is if it exists.

Thank you for sharing this, people meed to know these facts from people on the ground. Friends of mine were almost mobbed in a village in China when they tried to save some cats from being skinned alive.

people meed to know these facts from people on the ground.

Except they are not "facts" are they? Just something written on the interwebz by some random bod - The poster after asks where it is as he lives there and knows nothing of it - ( or he could be another random bod on the interwebz )

Facts? don't make me laugh :)

And the Chinese whinge about the rest of the world not doing the right thing when they would be the most illegal country in the world, buy anything and eat anything the Chinese way of screwing the planet up.

“People [in Peru] think that if it is ok for a Chinese or an American to have a monkey pet, why can they not get one in the local market?”

1. blame other people for your own fault - If I have done something wrong, that is because I was taught/guided/forced by others. Always blame the buyers more than the sellers.

2. Even though both Chinese and American are mentioned in this comment by the researcher, this article deliberately neglects the "American" part and put all blame on the Chinese.

The American part in China's sale of illegal wildlife????????? Please.

Am I getting this correct? The Warwick study is about exotic animal trade in the US, and yet the article deliberately forgets to mention that, instead trying to trick its readers into thinking that this is all about China.

I double checked and this article has got no link from the "US news" section, even though it is also about the US.

The Guardian is heading tabloid. It seeks increasingly to pander to stereotypes. Like misleading people into thinking air pollution in China is the worst in the world, while air brushing India and Pakistan which both have it 3 times worse.

The Guardian article that reported that inconvenient fact was buried, while those pointing at China and air pollution feature on the home page 3 times a month.

Very sad. Again, animal trafficers need life sentences. The trade needs stopping now not later. The buyers need a very serious education lesson and a massive fine if not a jail sentence too.

Yes, and if part of the popularity comes from people posting photos on Facebook, it shouldn't be too hard to track those people down and charge them.
