On the edge of Scholar's Piece, the strip of farmland just behind King's College, lies a granite stone which has become arguably Cambridge's most coveted tourist attraction.

For the many students who amble past it every day, it's easily missed; placed rather innocuously next to the bridge that joins Scholar's Piece to the rest of the college. But for the thousands of Chinese tourists who travel to Cambridge every year, it is this, rather than the city's grand 15th-century chapel, meticulously manicured lawns or historical statues, that they've come to see.

Carved into the stone are the first and last lines of a poem that has gone down in Chinese folklore. Titled Farewell to Cambridge, it was written in 1928 by Xu Zhimo, a 31-year-old poet and writer who was revisiting King's after studying there in the early 20s.

Well they've successfully managed to prevent an entire generation of locals from buying a house in NZ and Australia and quelle surprise, they're doing the same thing in Britain.
Answer me this, in a democracy, who is the government's primary duty to, the citizens and taxpayers of that country, or to Chinese investors? This is treasonous, in my opinion.

It does make me uneasy the way the Chinese explosion has happened in Cambridge and I personally have profited it in a number of my jobs. However, as you see them cruising around the city in the Land Rovers (etc.) you realise that having an open-door policy for a huge, powerful country who have more than enough resources to support their people that something is not quite right....

The Swiss, wisely, restrict foreign ownership of property. It is time Britain follows suit. The use of BVI companies to invest in London flats gives drugs money the opportunity [at a cost of 15% stamp duty] to launder profits and also collateralise the property in the BVI shell - so that on further sales only the BVI company shares change hands.

Vale Cambridge. The Chinese who buy ppty overseas have unfathomably deep pockets basically from corruption, exploitation and tax avoidance so they can price anyone out. In addition they need to take their money of China because they fear their govt and it's random retribution by way of corruption inquiries. They have a herd mentality when it comes to these things, unsure if they should go alone, but if a few have started buying in an overseas location (eg Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland) and have done so successfully then quickly thousands will join in from "fear of missing out". This is what major Australian cities have experienced locking out locals and was the same in Canada until the govt there brought it to a halt. You can kiss Cambridge goodbye.

No, it's his second name, or his given name. Xu is his family name. Tricky this pedant stuff isn't it.

The Chinese don't just have a love affair with Cambridge, they also have a love affair with London, Perth, Darwin, Auckland and anywhere else that isn't China. The reason is that the Yuan is expected to depreciate 25% against the USD this year and anyone with money in China wants to move it offshore. And then there's the fact that China is an unstable one-party state without the rule of law, freedom of speech, or any of the freedoms those in the West take for granted. Also, China's economy is tanking. The official GDP growth figure of 6.9% is regarded as fiction especially by the Chinese, and in dictatorships collapsing economies often result in collapsing regimes, something the Chinese have experienced many times over the centuries. Read up on the Taiping Rebellion, Boxer Rebellion etc for more on that. Finally, China has territorial disputes with Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, Malaysia, South Korea and Brunei which could erupt in hostility at any moment. Much safer to be elsewhere. The Chinese are noted for a keenly developed survival instinct honed over years of bitter experience with rapacious regimes, and they are acting accordingly.

I remain pretty convinced that the housing crisis in this country is as a result of inadequate supply. However, allowing overseas investors to buy property in this country carte blanche can't help the situation. Why on earth UK residential property ownership is not restricted to British (or at least EU) permanent residents only I have no idea.

Yosserian Winterspark 45s ago
We have to bear in mind that supply is only half the equation of supply and demand. Issues of supply could be less severe if demand weren't so high - so both sides of the equation need to be analysed.

And wealthy Chinese appear keen to cash in: the estate agents Savills estimate that in the past year, one in 20 new-build homes across the city and surrounding villages have been bought by Chinese owners.
This is utterly grotesque. Why on earth our government -which is literally employed to represent us and our interests - allows overseas investors to snap up our collective property, to then rent back to us and make a profit out of our need for a roof over our heads, is literally beyond our comprehension.
Any sensible government would and should enact residency restrictions on property ownership immediately.

Yet the useful idiots will keep voting Tory and the young who are most affected by this government's negative policies choose to not exercise their democratic right to vote.
We get the government we deserve, serves us right.
