government is celebrating a decision by a UN commission to expand its maritime territory in the South Atlantic Ocean by 35% to include the disputed Falkland islands and beyond.

The Argentine foreign ministry said its waters had increased by 1.7 million square km (0.66 million square miles) and the decision will be key in its dispute with Britain over the islands. Argentina lost a brief, bloody 1982 war with Britain after Argentinian troops seized the South Atlantic archipelago that Latin Americans call the Malvinas.

If the islanders chose independence, they would enjoy a different level of protection in terms of the UN's principles on self-determination. It could they then develop SATO with the UK as founding partner.

Don't the Falkland Islands themselves have an equivalent right to the seas around them? That would suggest that the line runs halfway between Argentina and the Falklands.

Interesting that the un-authored story (AP) is contradicted by readers below who appear to have taken the time to study the report in detail and come to vastly different conclusions. In this case, that the report DOES NOT place the Falkland Islands in Argentine waters.
Its a fine state of affairs when readers do the journalists job for them!

The islands are disputed - until that matter is settled (in favour of the self-determination of the islanders themselves), no ruling can be made.

First Oil and Gas despite being told by certain companies that oil and gas exists in the South Atlantic none has yet been extracted in any quantity, if at all. At the present price of a barrel of oil it is pretty unlikely that any company is going to invest in the South Atlantic not exactly an easy place to extract oil and gas.
The UK has a defence commitment in which it has guaranteed the protection of about 3000 people who live as far away from the UK as Japan, which as it is an open ended commitment over the years is going to amount to billions.
Solution quite simple really. Announce that on a certain date the UK government will be entering into negotiations with the government of Argentina and everything is on the table. At the same time inform the occupants that on a certain date a fleet of luxury liners will arrive off Port Stanley and will transport any interested parties totally free to the Port of Southampton. On arrival they will be presented with a legal document which if they sign one million pounds will be transmitted to their bank account.
So for 3 billion pounds the UK is off the hook, saving this country and its taxpayers billions in the process.

A bit of digging of the actual decision, as opposed to this piece, suggests it is solely a question of the extent of the continental shelf to which Argentina may drill for oil. It has nothing at all to do with the water above, and as far I can see there was no British counter claim. The report even has the caveat that there is an ongoing diplomatic dispute regarding territorial matters. Would it not have been an idea to point this out?

When I was a lad territorial waters were accepted around the world as a cannon shot off a nation's coast, I.e. three miles, then nations said that this was not enough and 12 miles became the accepted norm, then technology advanced and the idea of the exploitation of the seafloor became a real possibility so the concept of an Exclusive Economic Zone became the order of the day and this was set at 200 miles but of course for some, especially in the Americas this was insufficient and so it goes on, not just around European waters or USA waters but all around the world and that's without mentioning fisheries limits, papal decrees or international treaties, boil it all down to it's basic elements and there are two common factors that emerge in all these disputes, one is human greed and the other is the big fist.

Typical Guardian rubbing its hands with glee at the prospect of big, bad, evil Britain getting told what to do by the UN. Can you imagine if this was a slightly different scenario and we were putting pressure on the Danes to give us the Faroe Islands as they lie closer to British shores than Denmark? The lefties would be going bananas. There is no defence for the Argentines attempting to annex the Falklands - doing so would only serve to show that they are engaging in colonialism.

Let's acknowledge the fact that the U.N. would rather see the Falklands under Argentinian sovereignty. Britain's imperial legacy together with recent misadventures in Iraq leads me to suspect many in the U.N. see the Falklands as a relic from that era. Added to which are SA states applying pressure behind the scenes to recognise Argentina's claim.
The problem for the U.N. is that it's own rules prevent it from enforcing the most elegant ruling - recognise Argentine sovereignty. How to square this with the principle of self-determination?
