The US military has christened an experimental self-driving warship designed to hunt for enemy submarines, a major advance in robotic warfare at the core of America's strategy to counter Chinese and Russian naval investments.

A more positive way of looking at this is that it is replacing humnans in dangerous situations. Robotic vessels have been to Mars, humans haven't, because humans are fragile and expensive to maintain in extreme environments. Sending a robot to Mars is expensive. Sending humans costs 10 times more. Sending humans and bringing them back, 10 times more again. That is not to question concerns about technologies impact on jobs. Self driving technology will replace taxi drivers, for example? What do they do?

A mobile land based nuclear deterrent would cost a fraction of what we intend to spend on Trident, plus we could build it ourselves rather than feeding the American military industrial complex.

The Sea Hunter sounds like an idea from an action movie. Robotic warfare increases risk as it means greater willingness to use force without needing to consider your own side's soldiers. 
When the Chinese get this technology and the Russians follow we'll have fleets of robosubs tracking each other.

No it is not OK. But it is not an issue with drones, it is an issue Wittgenstein political decisions to carry out attacks like these whatever the tool that is being used. When you add in the multiple methods used for identifying supposed targets I don't think the targeting system in a jet would make much difference. As for the crews they may show Kore restraint. Or they may not referring that's pilot in a jet will be under a lot of pressure to make a decision someone in a trailer hundreds of miles away won't (adrenaline, assessing risk to themselves and so on). Tenner that during the Balkan campaigns and earlier forays in the gulf there were still plenty of innocent bystanders or misidentified targets hit.

In this case one could argue that with an unmanned drone such as this it saves lives, but looking at the bigger picture this is just another example where we are no longer needed for goods and services. Where this is leading us is what concerns me. We already see the banks investing more in derivatives and less direct investment in manufacturing. With increasingly reduced demand for human participation in the rich capitalists world, where does that leave us.

As well as the points made by SL&H above, I would be surprised if these vessels don't have the capability to blow themselves to kingdom come if required. Useful both in the event of an irrecoverable breakdown that poses a hazard to other vessels, and to prevent the hardware from unwelcome inspections by others. Incidentally, has no one yet mentioned how this technology could make the whole idea of Trident (and its supposed undetectability) obsolete?
