In southern China's Guangxi province, fishermen are trying to keep alive the 1,000 year-old tradition of using cormorants for their fishing.

These beautiful images capture the dying tradition kept by just a few men who sail peacefully across the River Li near Guilin.

The set of pictures, taken by China-based photographer Andy Beales, documents the life ofmodern cormorant masters in southern China who diligently keep to the fascinating ancient art of fishing. Also featured in this collection is Blackbeard, the youngest of the last fishermen in the village of Xingping.

The practice involves sending trained cormorants into the water to catch fish and bring them back alive for the fisherman's net.

To control the birds, the fishermen tie a snare near the base of the birds' throats, preventing them from swallowing larger fish from the river.

While the birds are able to eat smaller fish they catch, larger ones become stuck in their gullet and the method was first practiced in 960AD.

When they return to the boat - as they are trained to do - the fisherman makes them spit it up ready for selling the fish at the market.

It is thought that the birds can keep a tally of the fish that they catch and if they aren't rewarded for their catch, they stop diving for fish.

Blackbeard, the youngest of the men started fishing when he was 13, learning the skill from his father.

He took it on as a profession - which is also practiced in Japan, Greece and Macedonia - after finishing his studies at school.

I saw cormorant fishing like this in Iwakuni, Japan, over forty years ago. I wonder if it's still done?

Been there. Truly amazing landscape along the river - did the boat tour at a low water level with a lot of very intense metal scraping sounds of the ship's belly...

Theres a big difference between these and wedding photos. Here, he has all the time in the world, and a failed or mistimed shot can be caught again at a later time. Theres also time to adjust settings for prevailing light and position himself for the optimal shot. With weddings, you have to think on your feet, be able to read the light and adjust in seconds, and if you miss a shot, you dont get another chance later. Very different indeed.

Visited this area a couple of years ago expecting to see this (remember the HSBC adverts?) This is now only done for the tourists, and the queues for the boats to go and view this are as long as the great wall of China.

Saw the Li River in 1986 and it was beautiful and almost tourist-free. There were 12 of us on that Lindblad tour and it was wonderful. Not sure I'd like to visit China today.

Hi Peter, your right, tourist get a really bad experience in Yangshuo or Guilin, I went myself to the night show in Guilin city. The only way to meet these real guys and get shots like this is local connections. In the end on my second trip back I hired this actual photographer and we had an awesome experience, just us two and three guys at 4-5 am on a remote part of the river, just one motor raft past during the 2 hours we photographed the fishermen at sunrise.

The Cormorants actually enjoy this. Its a special bond thats formed between man and bird, man and nature, man and his environment. The Cormorants arent held prisoner and could leave if they wish. Instead, they hunt, they catch the fish and are rewarded and cared for.......its a two way thing.
