Archaeologists in Mongolia are slowlyunwrapping the mummy of a suspected ancient woman found preserved in the AltaiMountains.

So far only one hand and her feet inmodern-looking boots are visible, but experts believe the find dates to around1,500 years ago.

It also appears to be the first completeTurkic burial in Central Asia and the remains were found at an altitude of9,200ft (2,803 metres).

Researcher B.Sukhbaatar, from Khovd Museum, said: 'This person was not from theelite, and we believe it was likely a woman, because there is no bow in thetomb.

'Now we are carefully unwrapping the body, and once this is complete the specialists will be able to say more preciselyabout the gender.'

A host of possessions were found in the grave, offering a unique insight intolife in Mongolia in around the 6th century AD.

These included a saddle, bridle, clay vase, wooden bowl, trough, iron kettle, the remains of an entire horse, and ancientclothing.

There were also pillows, a sheep's head and felt travel bag in which wereplaced the whole back of a sheep, goat bones and small leather bag designed tocarry a cup.

The first Turkic people occupied a regionfrom Central Asia to Siberia from the 6th century BC.

The first mention of Turks was in a Chinesetext that made reference to Turk tribes and Sogdians along the Silk Road.

The Turkic people developed their ownalphabets, had their own language and are known for a number of symbolsincluding wolves and the colour blue.

In fact, somereports claim the word Turquoise originates from the word Turkish.

Today, modernTurks live across Asia and eastern Europe.

Adidas seems to be the by far oldest shoemaker in the world, for centuriesolder than any competitor

Ronnie pickering
Adidas were popular back then?

That'll be an early morning knock from the RSPCA then.

No matter how you look at it, it's grave robbing and disrespectful.

Bill In The Desert
Will some 'expert' please advise how many years does it take after burial, forgrave robbing to morph into anthropology? (Then, I will know what date to puton my casket plaque: "Do not open before January 2, ----.)

This is where the turks originate from. They invaded Christian Anatolia andoverrun neighbouring lands to form the ottoman empire. Their next objective isEurope , given the chance. They have never been good neighbours to anyone.

Should the dead not be left in peace? Or is it OK now that she's "ancient"?

Clothing rots quite quick, unless it's plastic. This sounds like a fake.#MadeUThink

helin
The painstaking work on those ancient clothes is amazing, she must have beensomeone important.

LaMaitresse
She must have been a from a certain higher class, if not elite, to have aburial such as that with grave goods and a sacrificed horse. Plus, her clothesare far too fine to be of a peasant or ordinary person. More information wouldhave been interesting.

I don't get why it is alright to disturb grave sites.
