Jie was barely a teenager when she got married just three days after meeting her 18-year-old husband Wen.

小洁与她18岁丈夫小文见面三天后就结婚了，这时她才十来岁。

They met at a Spring festival while the 13-year-old was visiting Wen's family when her husband-to-be insisted she stay and become his wife.

这对小夫妻在春节时见面的，当时13岁的小洁去小文家里玩，在她未来丈夫的坚持下，小洁留了下来，并成为了他的妻子。

Unaware of birth control, the teen wife was soon pregnant and dropped out of school - a fate similar to an increasing number of child brides in rural China.

Photographer Muyi Xiao documented cases of the child brides and grooms rocking Chinese society, who can't believe the young teenagers are really in love.

The legal age of marriage in China is 20 for women and 22 for men, although most rural weddings are sealed with a banquet before legally registering the union when both bride and groom come of age.

Thanks to China's one-child policy, the gender imbalance in the country is stark as for years parents have preferred boys to girls.

Now finding a suitable wife is tough going, and experts say teenage boys are keen to secure their bride quickly, for fear of losing her to the competition.

According to Muyi Xiao, the girls are also eager to tie the knot earlier fearing an arranged marriage to a man of their parents choosing - instead of their own - if they don't settle down fast enough.

Rural China really is another country compared to the city's, it's not what people here think of as rural. Apart from phones and TVs you could be living divorced completely from the modern world. But I can assure you they seem very happy and the Chinese rural areas can be breathtakingly beautiful

Having been to China, I had the opportunity to visit both urban and rural areas and I have to say I'm not surprised with this news coming from the rural areas. There's nothing to do there! It's literally just farm land and extremely basic houses and the closest city could be hundreds of miles away, so of course these teenagers will get bored and focus on family more than work because the only work they can do is farm work or move to a big city away from their family and work for pennies for crazy long hours. Although I think it's waaaayyy too young to have children and be marred, I know several teenagers from this country who have had great education and live in first world conditions and they still end up pregnant at 14. It's not just China, it's Britain and every other country in the world.

at 13 most girls are capable of child bearing, it asnt that long ago it was common here, in the us i believe it is stilllegal to marry at 13, jerry lee lewis did, poor countries have high mortality rates so young brides make sebse, dont try and inflict our culture on other societies.

Is it just me, or is there no convincing/detailed explanation of why this increase is linked to the VERY recent lifting of the one child rule? If some rural communities have always married young, what difference does it make if they can have one child or more? Just because they can have more than one doesn't mean they have to and I was under the impression that in poor rural areas the one child policy was very difficult to enforce and therefore they had more than one child anyway? Sounds like they are making a 'link' that isn't there...

The fact is they do but? Look at where in the country they live. Kinda makes it look like back in the early 1800s America dontcha think? Relatively speaking? When women married at 18. Had babies at that age. My great great grandpa met his wife when he was 16. They had to wait two years to get married. Both were immigrants (Ukraine and Belarus) and would've been married as long as they were both alive but he died of a massive heart attack in 1941.
