The Chinese finance minister, Lou Jiwei, has criticized Donald Trump, calling him “an irrational type” due to the Republican presidential frontrunner's proposal that tariffs on imported Chinese goods be increased to up to 45%.

美国共和党总统候选人提议把进口中国商品的关税提高到45%，而中国财政部长楼继伟批评称，川普的提议表明他是个非理性的人。

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Sunday, Lou said: “Trump is an irrational type. If he were to do this, that would be in violation of the rules set by the World Trade Organization.”

Lou said that if the US put Trump's proposal into effect, it “would not be entitled to its position as the world's major power. The US needs to recognize that the US and China are mutually dependent on each other. Our economic cycles are intertwined.“

He acknowledged that rhetoric in a US presidential campaign can become heated.

I believe China Finance Minister is right in his assertion about raising tariffs on imported Chinese goods. China is a role model with plans to redevelop new skills for their labour force. It is like defending the typewriters in light of advances in computers.

Um, I'm no apologist for China, but China didn't "take" anything from America.
American corporations offshored jobs so that American consumers could enjoy cheaper prices and American businesses could increase their profit margins.
And the American public made the choice years and years before China was a member of the WTO to buy cheap Chinese crap instead of pricier American crap.
Almost nobody complains on Main Street that China's purchase of America's debt keeps interest rates low and enables America to live beyond its means.
If a President Trump (shudder) were to begin to enact a 45% tariff maybe the Chinese could ominously hint about calling in their debt?
China suffered humiliation at the hands of Western imperialists in the 19th century. Maybe it's payback time..

Chinese goods dominate markets because they're cheap. They're cheap because their manufacturing costs are low. The main component of manufacturing costs are wages. The Chinese pay $2 an hour.
So, let's pay our workers $1.50 an hour. Regain all the manufacturing and lead the world in Growth.
Or, tariff the Chinese until they deal decently with their people and compete with quality, not the misery of their workers.

Trump is a guy who chose to offshore his manufacturing to China and Mexico. And who imports people to staff his businesses rather than hiring Americans, IT was the GOP that in 2003 GAVE companies that off shored jobs a big tax credit. If they fire Americans and move offshore the employer gets tax money for shafting Americans. I wouldn't vote for the GOP for that reason alone

I thought about what he said….. and think we have to consider context.
This is the finance minister speaking, so he is speaking in financial terms.
With that in mind he is taling world power as regards economy.

Let's remember that the Chinese didn't come over here and abduct Whirlpool and Briggs & Stratton and all of those other manufacturers. The tax policies passed by both parties made it profitable to move those jobs overseas. Costs went down, profits went up, and INVESTORS made money. Members of both parties in Congress helped block any type of major investment in helping displaced workers and staffing companies put those skilled workers back to work at permanent part time jobs at lower pay with no benefits, the so called "service economy". And yet we still seem to think that China did something to us and immigrants from Mexico are somehow taking jobs away from "real Americans".

Taxation was largly not the reason for relocation of companies it was the wages.
That aside…. taxation is what we see before us, the roads bridges the education system the safety, (aka defense), the environmental regulation so you can breath the air in (as opposed to places in China), the system to protect that, the judicial recourse, which protects assets, and many many others. If we reduce this thing to only a thing of taxes, we will see a equilivency eventually to those places, who have not those things government provides and we take for granted.
Which is another reason tariff on select goods is necessary to protect industries and jobs. Wages are higher, taxes may be higher, environmental regulation is higher, and we do not want to change that.

税收不是一个公司搬迁的原因，薪资水平才是公司搬迁的原因。
另一方面。是税收成就了我们面前的一切，我们的道路、桥梁、教育系统、国防系统（防御系统）、环境的保护使我们的空气质量很好（与中国相反）、保护这一切的系统、司法系统，还有其它很多很多。如果我们不看这些只看税收，我们会变成和那些没有这一切的国家一样的。

Agree on the ignoramus part.
China stopped buying our debt serveral years ago. Have they started to unload/sell that which they did hold…hard to tell, as that is not exactly a transparant market. They have need to do so with the current downturn, we do know that.
