China wants to land on Mars by 2021: Top official atthe country's space agency reveals plans for mission to the red planet

China has set its sights firmly on Mars and is aimingto launch a mission to the red planet by 2020, a top official has revealed.

中国已经瞄准了火星，打算在2020年前前往火星，一名高级官员披露说。

Long-regarded as a secretive branch of the country'svast military, the China National Space Administration (CNSA) has beenconsidered something of a lone wolf in the increasingly cooperative space race.

长久以来都被认为是中国军队的一个秘密分支机构的中国航天局在如今这个越发合作性的太空竞赛中已经被当成了一只独狼。

But the chief designer of lunar and Mars missions forthe CNSA has opened up about the agency's plans for planetary exploration andfuture collaboration in a rare interview.

In an interview with the BBC, Wu Weiren said theagency's short-term goal is to orbit and land on the moon as well as bring backlunar samples.

However, the agency's long-term goal is to explore andsettle on the lunar surface, with manned missions staying longer on the surfaceand even establishing a research base.

Kinda surprised the greedy Chinese haven't alreadydeclared that Mars belongs to them. They seem to believe they can plunk down anartificial island in any sea they want and declare it all belongs to them.
