Australian smokers will have to pay more than anyone else in the world for cigarettes amid plans for a huge tax hike that will push prices up to ￡23 a pack.

The country already has some of the priciest cigarettes on the planet with a pack in Melbourne costing over ￡3.50 more than in London and New York.

But prices will soar past $40 a packet by 2020 under planned tax changes which will see tobacco excise hiked by 12.5 per cent each year for the next four years.

@dailyfailers......Born in the 50s you were considered odd if you didn't smoke. Most people actually enjoy smoking, and most countries in Europe sell tobacco for less than half the price here. This dopey government think people are starting to give up, but more people are now buying tobacco abroad.

Hmm smokers pay for the NHS if they work then they ALSO pay tax on cigs and many smokers don't have 'poor health' at least not for very long - they just die, so I imagine they pay more in and get less out than non smokers. Not sure how it works in Oz - probably the same. I don't smoke btw, or drink (allergies) so no horse in this race.

I look back in horror at the days when we lit up cigs, pipes and cigars in other people's houses without even asking if they minded. Sitting in smoke filled cinemas and offices was considered the norm in these not so distant days. I wonder if similar comments will be made about petrol driven vehicles in 20 years time?
