TOKUNOSHIMA —Three municipalities on a remote island in southwestern Japan have launched an unprecedented project to neuter all 3,000 resident felines in order to protect native rabbits designated as a special national treasure.

Some 200 Amami rabbits are estimated to inhabit the island of Tokunoshima in Kagoshima Prefecture, which has a human population of 23,000. The rabbits, however, are at great risk of being eaten by stray cats in the mountainous areas.

“Domestic cats have a hunting instinct, and they hunt when they become feral,” says Harutaka Watanabe at the Environment Ministry’s nature conservation office on Tokunoshima Island.

“There are no carnivorous mammals on the island, so native rabbits are not so vigilant (of being preyed upon),” according to Watanabe, 30.

Culling all the stray cats is not a realistic option for the island, which is part of the Amami and Ryukyu islands area seeking to be registered as a World Natural Heritage site.

Osamu Minobe, a 60-year-old resident of the town of Isen on the island, says the island would not qualify as a heritage site “if we kill thousands (of cats).”

I often notice that people in Japan are inconsistent about getting their cats neutered. it's astonishing. Who'd want an intact Tom cat for a pet, spraying up the place? Do Japanese have a nasal deficiency?

It is nature's way and humans have to stop harming animals because they don't like the nature of things. Take some rabbits to a sanctuary. Why must people put cats through painful surgery? It's too cruel.

At first I thought it was going to take years for this to take effect but then I realized that rabbits reproduce quite quickly too.
And to the comment that it takes two to tango. I thought the same too but isnt neuturing cheaper faster and easier than sterilizing female cats?

Domestic and feral cats are responsible for the extinction of thousands of small birds and mammals all over the world and they compete for food with other native carnivores. This may seem like a good initiative to desex the cats, but the best way would be to just ban cats on the island completely.

The tom I had in the UK was neutered. He still sprayed. Maybe it's only gaijin toms that spray.

Was he outdoors at the time? I've only ever had a neutered Tom spray indoors when he couldn't get to his litter tray.

Oh, this is so annoyingly Japanese. People who own a cat should present it to a facility to have it neutered/spayed (or tapped on the head). They should be ear-marked and required to wear belled collars or harnesses. There should be a time frame for this and after that, any cat not so divested/vested is classed as feral and should be humanely removed from the eco-system. There should be a ban on bring cats to the island. If Japan really really cares about their wildlife and show the world this they need to take a leaf out of the book of NZ and Australia in cleaning up small-island environments. Should be applied Japan-wide.

Neutering is NOT only about fixing the males, its also about fixing the females, clearly they are fixing both!

Rabbits go extinct... I call BS! Besides, rabbits' function is to be prey for animals higher on the food chain, e.g. cats. That's evolution for you! This is also the reason why rabbits spread like wildfire if uncontrolled. Let humans interfere and nature will be screwed!

GW, Not gender specific, perhaps, but neutering a male cat in Japan is cheaper than a femail, apparently.
Iriomote Yamaneko is a protected cat species, so some islands will want to protect their rabbits, others their native cats.
 
 GW(楼上)，阉割，可能雄性/雌性都可以，但是在日本，阉割公猫很明显要比母猫要轻松。
西表山猫是一种受保护的猫，所以一些岛屿想要保护他们的兔子，其他的一些岛屿想要保护当地的猫。

Do with cats what they do with dogs. Did you ever notice that there are no stray dogs in Japan? Because they are caught and euthanized the same day.
