The region where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea has seen some of the most rapid urban expansion in human history over the past few decades – transforming what was mostly agricultural land in 1979 into what is the manufacturing heartland of a global economic superpower today.

In 2008, China announced plans to mesh Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Dongguan, Zhaoqing, Foshan, Huizhou, Jiangmen, Zhongshan and Zhuhai into a single megacity. A series of massive infrastructure projects are under way to merge transport, energy, water and telecoms networks across the nine cities. Development has been relentless, and the World Bank recently named the Pearl River Delta as the biggest urban area in the world in terms of population and geographical size.

Visited Guangzhou in 1980, many of the old houses which were built by the opium trade were wonderful, probably all pulled down now, there were some really poor areas too. Stayed in a hotel which was the only high rise, looked out over the river and onto a smog covered city. The old Zoo, Fun Park and markets were really interesting if not culturally difficult on the senses.

Just re-read that, I guess many locals may prefer the life style they have now, so I guess me seeing it as some time capsule theme park can bee seen as culturally ignorant. I was talking more of me a visitor, the cultural shock was great for me.
重新读一下,我猜许多当地人会喜欢他们现在的生活方式,所以如果我把它视为胶囊主题公园的话,会被认为没文化,我多次提起我是一名游客,文化震撼对我而言是巨大的。

The most important aspect of this sights are lost because there is no hint of what is inside the buildings.
One would be totally surprised to see miriads of rooms which would make Ali Baba discovery of the cave pale in comparison to the inside decorations of the halls
and flats.

Why in your map of the Pearl River Delta area from Guangzhou to Hong Kong do you indicate Hong Kong to apparently comprise Central Hong Kong (once known as Victoria) to be Hong Kong?

Umm ... because it's "Central Hong Kong"? They also have a single dot to indicate where the other cities are; the boundaries aren't shown. Using the downtown centre seems perfectly reasonable to me.
嗯……因为这是“香港市中心”?他们也用一个点标示其他城市所在;边界完全也没有标明。标示在市中心完全合理。

and just think, this is within a China that has only seen modest population growth in the past 30 years !
Much of the urban growth has been the massive internal migration from rural to urban areas .......not dissimilar to Europe and the US
in the 19th and 20th Centuries....
With the Indian population to overtake the Chinese within the next few years, a similar series of that country would no doubt be even more frightening !

Most of the population growth of Shenzen is due to migration from other areas. The native language of Shenzen was Cantonese, but good luck finding someone in Shenzen who speaks Cantonese these days. The incredible development is due in large part to the Communist Party's economic reform programs which started over 30 years ago with Deng Xiaoping. I remember one year Shenzen was developing the Shenzen Special Economic Zone and a university was built .. and within a decade I just didn't recognize the place.

This is the effect of population growth in the face of a strict "one child per family" policy, a policy that's been constantly criticized in the West as infringing the human right to produce as many kids as possible.
That in itself is a bit of a warning.....

Cities are like dinosaurs...They grow and need more food to grow even bigger.
So where does that leave us humans.?
As in nature when there is competition for food, the strongest survives....
Is there competition for food today.?...Apparently not, but those creatures (cities /dinosaurs), continue to grow and grow.
About half of all peoples, live in there cities and modern communications ensures migration will increase to where the living is best...Cities.
There is no going back,,,,

约有一半的人,生活在那些城市,而现代化的通讯则会确保迁徙还会向生活最好的城市增长...无法回头。

Today's news....
The UK's trade deficit for the first quarter is at its biggest since 2008.
The gap between imports and exports for the first three months of 2016 stands at £13.3bn, up from £12.2bn in the fourth quarter of 2015, says the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
Analysts said this was more evidence of the weight of global economic weakness on the UK. One described the figures as "truly horrible"
Scary indeed.!
