It's hard to describe how long six-and-a-half minutes feels when you are listening to a vulnerable person begging for a little human kindness.
I imagine that when you are the one doing the begging, a 96-year-old, once a woman of substance but now a confused and hungry nonagenarian, it feels far longer.

‘Hello?’ she called, not just once or twice, but 25 times to the trio of care staff nearby. I stood with my two colleagues as they chortled over a cup of tea.‘Hello…’ one of them replied, mocking the elderly resident with a snatch of the old Lionel Richie love song. I was eventually told to take her some food.
“hello?”
Add to that the same elderly woman crying in pain as she was roughly moved on another occasion, other residents staying in their rooms because there were not enough staff to help them reach communal areas, called wicked names behind their back, disdained, disrespected and neglected and you can start to form a clear picture of life in the nursing home where I worked last month.

The answer is mandatory CCTV in every room, with audio. It is a compromise to patient privacy but is absolutely essential today, sadly.

I work as a chef in a Nursing home and we (as a company), are getting CCTV in our homes, BUT authorities say it is ILLEGAL for CCTV to be in their rooms or bathrooms, it can only be in hallways, dining rooms, kitchen and lounges. our staff are not this bad though, all staff are snitches in that place, if they see you do ANYTHING wrong they run to management for brownie points lol.

Then you are fortunate to be in that position. Most people have to juggle working and looking after children with caring for elderly relatives, so being there 24/7 isn't possible. Also, I really hope your parents don't develop a condition which affects their behaviour, such as dementia and that they are sensible and compliant with advice. A problem I see time and again is exhausted sons or daughters who have to watch their parent constantly because they can't understand or won't comply with advice for keeping them safe, eg don't stand up on your own because you fall over. They often have to get up in the night with them so exist on very little sleep. They can't go out at all unless there is someone to take over. Many do this while being verbally and sometimes physically attacked by their parent and all the while feeling the grief of knowing they would never behave like that usually, but they don't know what they're doing. I wouldn't be too smug if I were you.

The plan is to vet and hire a former nurse as a live in full time carer paid a decent salary to look after me in old age. Way better than being in a hell hole of a nursing home. The ones we have over in this part of the world is very depressing. I'll rather die first than be stuck in one. No kids and single so gotta make plans for the inevitable.

Can we know who is behind the Retirement Village Group of 'care' homes? The CEO and Board Members, or owners if it is privately owned? I am guessing we are not allowed to know who it is making millions from the sufferings of our elderly. They keep themselves well hidden.

Yes the attitude of some of the staff is very disrespectful, but why single them out? Where are the owners and managers...the place sounds woefully understaffed, staff inadequately trained. Managers should be fostering the correct workplace culture and anyone not up to the job should be managed out of the door.
