The Chinese military is poised to send submarines armed with nuclear missiles into the Pacific Ocean for the first time arguing that new US weapons systems have so undermined Beijing’s existing deterrent force that it has been left with no alternative.

Why would anyone expect them to do anything different? The US and ourselves and the Russians have been parading the seas for decades with nuclear weapons. As they exist and others feel threatened by us having them it stands to reason everyone else wants them. Remind me who actually used them in aggression?

China will *never* give launch autonomy to her submarine commanders.
But it has to prepare for the possibility of a limited conventional war against the USA in the South China Sea. It could not win such a war - so it can only seek to deter the USA from engaging in one by threatening her allies. The launch platforms are far too noisy to stand any significant chance of approaching weapons' range of the continental USA without detection and compromise. So they will be targeted at countries that are in range from home waters.

Open Ocean Patrols make no-sense given China's level of technology and experience of Nuclear Submarine operations...not withstanding the difficulties they would have with Command and Control - but some local variant of SSBN "Bastion's" defended area's close to China's coast would make sense and enable them to hit targets Japan/Korea/Philippines and US bases there...

The area of ocean that China are claiming is simply ridiculous. It's clear to see why they're pissing off their neighbours especially by simply enveloping Taiwan as if it's not a separate country (which in their stubborn eyes it isn't still...). China's attitude to these country stinks just like the USA's does to Central/South America and Russia's to Eastern Europe. Pathetic......

If we accept US and UK Nuclear submarines let alone US Fleets of Aircraft carriers roaming the oceans of the world we can hardly complain if China has nuclear submarines operating in the ocean which ajoins it . All increases in nuclear armed vessels or IBM's are a cause of considerable concern but the US's aggressive policy in the South China Seas and its belief in its global exceptionalism or ' manifest destiny ' were it can't accept the inevitable growth of other Superpowers which it always views as a threat to its status endangers us all.
An attitude which since 1945 could lead us all to oblivion.

Unfortunately for them the USA still has the upper hand and doesn't scare easily.
It's about time they were taken to task over their developments in the South China Sea (just because it has China in its name doesn't mean it's Chinese!).
