“This” says Emma Gao as she races through the sun-scorched countryside of north-west China in a dusty Nissan Livina “is la Route des Chateaux.”

“There are almost 40 different entrepreneurs – maybe more. Every day it is changing” the Chinese winemaker explains slaloming between French English and Mandarin as she tours her 70-hectare (170-acre) vineyard at the heart of a region government officials are calling China’s Bordeaux.

Gao a 40-year-old who trained at Bordeaux University’s oenology institute was one of the first vintners to set up shop in this arid corner of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region more than 600 miles west of Beijing. Armed with a 300000 yuan (£32000) loan from her parents she founded Silver Heights her award-winning boutique winery almost a decade ago.

In 2012 she opened a vineyard on the stony eastern slopes of the Helan mountain wagering that its parched land could produce world-beating wines. “There was nothing” Gao recalls weaving through newly planted lots of cabernet sauvignon chardonnay marcelan and petit verdot.

Four years on and a scramble for land is under way here as Chinese and international wine giants and super-rich would-be vintners follow Gao’s lead ploughing fortunes into Ningxia wineries.

Making wine uses very little water as this short article in grauniad shows:
 http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/jan/10/how-much-water-food-production-waste
(Over 17 tons of water to produce a single kg of chocolate. Chocoholics please note you are destroying the planet. )

 http://www.theguardian.com/news/datablog/2013/jan/10/how-much-water-food-production-waste

They apparently have "sunshine like Avignon" but winters like Siberia. I had no idea vines could be "buried" during winter to protect them from the cold!!
Use of enormous amounts of water by the way is a problem for the whole planet not just China. We should question whether this is the best use of land.

Laugh all you want guys but everyone said the same thing about Japanese Whiskey before they started knocking the scots out the ball park. Now the Japanese are up their with the best.

I don't think Japan has in any way knocked Scotch whisky 'out of the ballpark'.
But in fairness any Japanese whiskies I have tried have been completely good.

"China's Bordeaux: winemakers in 'gold rush' to turn desert into vineyards"
The water supply would be an issue but there are known underground water resources. Better facilities to collect and keep the rain water may also help. The solar energy may also be abundant in such vast area with sunny weather all year around which can be harnessed in many ways.

To produce good wine you need good sunny weather when the grapes are ripening and you need a competent oenologist in charge of the whole process (from site sextion to bottling).
Everything else is secondary. Of course the soil matters but not as much as you might think. If you look at the world's vineyards from Chablis to Napa valley you can see good wine produced in a huge variety of places varying from barren stony ground to rich alluvial soil.
With good oenologists in charge (Gao reportedly trained at Bordeaux University’s oenology institute) there is no reason why Ningxia cannot produce excellent wine.

I'll give it a try but honestly living in Europe gives us access to so many wines from Italy France Spain Portugal Germany Slovenia etc etc that we really dont need to import any. Perhaps after Brexit the UK voters may be convinced that Chinese wine is an excellent cheaper alternative to EU regulated wine.the Uk will be in an excellent negotiang position for that.

Yes why get wine from 204 miles away when we can ship it halfway round the world.

But hey fucking the environment is one of the biggest reasons for Brexit - no more tedious directives protecting things.

I live in Switzerland (surrounded by EU countries but not a member of the EU) and the best value wines in the local wine shops are often from Chile or Australia. The very best red wines are still from France but they're incredibly expensive; I can't afford the equivalent of £50/bottle for wine I drink every day. At price points below about the equivalent of £10/bottle you can get better quality from Chile than from France.

Is Aldi in Switzerland? You might want to try their French pinot noir in the UK that is insane value for £5.

But if they're not buying vineyards in France they're going about this money laundering business the wrong way.

It was only a matter of time - can't be worse than the ubiquitous Chinese 'Great Wall Wine'. Why do they have to pretend to be French to believe they can produce good wine though?
