Every year pictures from Yulin dog meat festival circulate online with horrified reactions on social media calling for the barbaric practice to end. Earlier this month celebrities MPs and campaigners supported a petition to stop the festival at the Chinese Embassy in London.

As this year's festival begins in the Chinese city it's worth pointing out that the responses from manycondemning the practice are extremely hypocritical. Though the pictures appal me too it is quite ridiculous how much attention this shameful festival gets from Western media. Unless the UK becomes a completely vegetarian country and stops rearing animals for their flesh most people don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to complaining about a meat-eating festival.

It is not as if all 1.4 billion Chinese people go around eating dog meat during this festival as many would have you believe. Labelling it as China's annual dog meat festival is incorrect and means that the whole of the country's population comes under scrutiny. So to clear things up: the majority of Chinese people do not eat dog and there is an ever-growing movement against the festival.

Dogs and cats have been sextively bred for thousands of years to be our friends. Your pet pig is not going to die trying to protect you and that is why it's wrong to eat them. Also if you wanna make the 'you eat meat so therefore all creatures are fair game' argument thenlet's put your mom on the menu. Against that cause it's human? Well you eat other creatures so why not your family/friends as well as they're meat too.

I see European eating horses how come no western nation is telling these people to stop eating their horses that are bread for thousands of years to be their friends? Why are you eating beef when it's sacred to people in India? 
You are not God nor king of the world therefore don't tell other people what to eat and not to eat. I can find thousands of other food that you eat that are offensive to other nations too.

I love meat meat meat meat. People are all different. just because it's not our customs makes it wrong. just being here on this earth in mass numbers is wrong. ppl need to take care of there own before trying to change others we have to much of our own problems.

REALITY CHECK: The problem is not using dogs for food! The problem is the way these dogs are slaughtered. The Chinese believe that dogs must be tortured to death to make them taste good... Some are boiled alive or skinned alive just to improve their taste... This is not how Western Countries butcher their meat!!!!!!!!

@Alfred Ting Agree... just because Western countries sleep with their dogs horses etc. Don't mean other nation has too. Majority of these dogs are bred as food not pets. I see people eating dogs in Thailand but there were hundreds of dogs running around in the street that no one care about. 
Thousands of so call friends are sitting in dog shelter suffering daily no one complained about that. Remember these are "friends" to western countries.

I ate dog while in Chile in 1972. I didn't make a habit it but must say it wasn't bad and during the Allende regime that was a common food source for the poor.

Just because you have dogs for pets doesn't mean others cannot eat dogs. What if I have a chicken for a pet ? Are you going to stop eating chicken ? Stupid people. I believe the issue has never been specifically about the consumption of dog meat as much as it has been about the methods by which the meat is processed. There have been videos of the animals being skinned alive and left to suffer in excruciating pain. It is entirely possible to be against this practice while still maintaining a carnivorous lifestyle. You don't have to be a vegetarian to believe in humane ethical treatment of animals. Arguing otherwise makes one seem unreasonably biased and narrow minded especially when she makes such an authoritative statement as the closing sentence of this piece.

@Amy Dionne First of all this article is clearly not about the US but whatever. We do not skin cows and chickens alive and leave them in piles. We have laws passed as far back as 1958 dictating the humane treatment of animals processed for food. I cannot promise that every company follows these laws as they are supposed to but that can be said for any law in any industry. For you to say that "all animals consumed in the US" are skinned alive and left to suffer is asinine and ignorant.
