TOKYO — Japan has captured 90 sei whales and 25 Bryde’s whales in the northwestern Pacific during its annual “research whaling” the Fisheries Agency said Monday concluding this year’s whaling program starting in May.

The whaling fleet also spotted 270 groups of sei whales consisting of 444 individuals and 94 groups of Bryde’s whales consisting of 104 individuals in the waters during the program commissioned to the Tokyo-based institute.

Everyone knows the only purpose of the "research" is to see if it tastes better with soy sauce or mayonnaise. There is no scientific validity for their research and hence the extreme lack of publications in different languages. They're biggest discovery to date: "if you kill one there is one less but if there are still more there are still more to kill." Then they proceed to weigh it and get into the real gritty stuff; like cost/kilo of meat.

The headline is wrong. No whales were 'captured': 115 animals were brutally killed using exploding harpoons and either finished off with rifle bullets when the whales have been dragged closer to the boat or left to drown in their own blood. Then they were summarily butchered and all but the 'tasty' bits thrown overboard.
The 'research' lie has been blown out of the water so often and so completely it's a painful embarrassment.
Shame on the bloody 'researchers'.

China ignores international rulings concerning South China Sea and Japan ignores rulings as well concerning whaling. Why is one court and its ruling more valid than the other?

My student explained to me that it is their tradition and if anyone from outside criticizes it they will defend it even if they don't really care about it anymore.

How many would they have killed if it was for commercial whaling?
Probably not as many as Norway.
"Norway killed more whales in 2015 and 2016 than Japan and Iceland combined but the Scandinavian country has largely evaded the same level of criticism. "

For the record: I think Japan should stop the "survey whaling" 调査捕鲸 farce. If there are people in Japan who want to eat whale meat import it from Iceland or Norway. The whale won't taste any different if it is killed by a Norwegian or a Icelander.
I don't obxt to whaling if it is sustainable. I'm not wildly enthusiastic about it either. But the current Japanese program is as dumb as it gets in PR terms. The government is essentially using my tax money to needlessly generate ill will. All this to protect the jobs of flunkies in various quangos.
Incidentally. Don't blame this on Abe. When the DPJ held power Japanese environmental blogs thought it might end whaling as part of its campaign to eliminate wasteful government programs. Not only did it do nothing it refused requests from environmentalists to identify its pro-whaling MPs.
