The NewZealand government has announced a project to the rid country of rats andother predators by 2050.

新西兰政府宣布要在2050年前在全国范围内消灭所有老鼠和其他捕食者的计划。

John Key, the Prime Minister, said thecountry would undertake a “world first” extermination programme aimed at makingthe introduced species of rats, stoats and possums extinct within 34 years.

该国总理称新西兰将执行“世界首个”灭绝计划，让老鼠，白鼬以及负鼠等外来物种在34年内灭绝。

He said in a statement: “Our ambition isthat by 2050 every single part of New Zealand will be completely free of rats,stoats and possums.

Species introduced to New Zealand kill 25million native birds a year, including the national bird, the Kiwi, of which 20die per week, according to the government. It says the estimated financialcost of the species is NZ$3.3bn (￡1.76bn) a year.

Pragmatically, it's incredibly ambitious -more than a touch of hubris here I reckon.
