WASHINGTON —White House hopeful Donald Trump has savaged U.S. ally Japan, expressingfrustration that Washington must defend the Asian nation but that if the UnitedStates is attacked, Japanese can “sit home and watch Sony television.”

TheRepublican nominee launched the broadside during a speech Friday in Iowa wherehe reprised his criticism of countries that do not pull their weight in termsof financial contributions to NATO, and of countries like Japan and South Koreathat receive US protection.

“You knowwe have a treaty with Japan, where if Japan is attacked, we have to use thefull force and might of the United States,” Trump said.

Trumpadded that the United States protects Japan, South Korea, Germany, Saudi Arabiaand other nations, and “they don’t pay anything near what it costs.”

“Theyhave to pay. Because this isn’t 40 years ago,” he added. “It’s got to be atwo-way street.”

Japan’salliance with Washington has been the bedrock of its defense since the end ofWorld War II, and the country still hosts 47,000 US troops.

Trumpstirred international concern in April by stressing that NATO member statesshould begin paying their “fair share,” and that Japan and South Korea must beprepared to arm themselves to deter a threat from North Korea.

No they won't.... becauseif the U.S. is attacked the attacker would only be China or Russia at thispoint in time. And if that is the case, especially in the event its a Chineseattack, you know the Chinese would probably strike Japan at the same time. Ifit was Russia... they might not go after Japan but the U.S. could handle themalone... but I'm sure Japan would send troops if needed. Trump is way off base.Only speculating here....

As somebody who likes Japan, I found few images more nauseating thanthose of former PM Koizumi Junichiro ingratiating himself to such an extentwith George W. Bush during their meetings. The above article is abouta stupid, tiresome point that Trump keeps making. Unlike Japan, the continentalUnited States is impervious to conventional military attack. The only waysAmerica's adversaries can directly attack it are via terrorism or nuclearmissiles. It's not like an enemy force can amass itself along the border inMexico or Canada and successfully take U.S. territory a la North Korea againstthe South in 1950. Therefore, I've always found the idea of reciprocity indefense treaty obligations to be kind of dumb.

Sounds like he thinks Sonyis a TV broadcaster rather than an equipment manufacturer. Maybe he wasreferring to Sony Universal content? Either way, Trump is as careless with hislanguage as he is with international relations. While not to say judiciouschange based on negotiation and recognition of mutual benefits is impossible(in fact, it happens continuously), the intricate interrelationshipspainstakingly constructed from the ashes of World War Two are to be respected,not toyed with.
