China is developing a hypersonic aircraftto take pilots, and perhaps even passengers, to the edge of space.

中国正在研发一款高超音速飞机，将飞行员甚至是乘客带到太空边缘。

A state aerospace firm has reportedly begunresearch on an aircraft capable of taking off from a runway and carrying a crewinto low Earth orbit.

据报道一家国有航天公司已经开始研发这种飞机，从跑道升空，携带机组成员进入近地轨道。

The design is purported to be a moreefficient successor to Nasa’s Space Shuttle, which was launched on a rocket butlanded on a runway.

The new space plane is being developed by the China Aerospace Science andTechnology Corporation (CASTC).

这款新飞机由中国航天科技集团公司开发。

When completed it could dramatically reduce the costs of space travel and giveChina a boost in the renewed space race.

According to Popular Science, the aircraft would take off like anormal plane, before a supersonic scramjet engine kicks in to lift it to almost100 km above sea level.

At this point, rocket boosters will providethe additional thrust, giving it enough power to escape the clutches of Earth'slower atmosphere.

Plans for the plane were discussed on statebroadcaster CCTV, with a plane entering service by 2030.

According to Popular Science, the China’s new hypersonic space plane will use acombined cycle air breathing engine along with rocket motors.

This is a similar approach to that taken bythe British-built Skylon hypersonic aircraft, which uses engines built byReaction Engines to achieve hypersonic flight.

这方法和英国制造的云霄塔高超音速飞机类似，该飞机采用Reaction Engines（字面意思：反动式发动机）制造的引擎来实现高超音速飞行。
