“There’s a bit of a British attitude which treats China as a sweatshop on the Pearl River,” George Osborne opined during a trip to the world’s second largest economy in 2013.
“One of the things I’m trying to do this week in China is change British attitudes,”he said.
The chancellor’s message appears to have eluded the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt. On Tuesday, citing his Chinese wife as inspiration, Hunt suggested Britons needed to pull up their socks and work hard “in the way that Asian economies are prepared to work hard”.

The answer, as might be expected in a country with more than 760 million workers, is complex.
The average Chinese worker puts in somewhere between 2,000 and 2,200 hours each year, Wang Qi, a researcher at Beijing Normal University, told the Wall Street Journal last year.
That compares to a UK average of 1,677 hours last year, according to figures from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.
But Chinese work hours have been falling for at least three decades, said Li Chang’an, a labour economist at Beijing’s University of International Business and Economics.
“Since the 1980s and 1990s, Chinese workers have been working shorter and shorter hours,” Li said, pointing to improved labour laws, improved productivity and the introduction of two-day weekends.
“We visit many factories every year,” Li added. “In most, working conditions are improving [and] salaries increasing while working hours are decreasing.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, China’s hardest grafters are its impoverished and often exploited migrant workers, the Wall Street Journal found.

The success of a nation is not how hard they work but like a successful politician how hard they make others work to keep them to the style they have been accustomed.
The job of government is to make peoples lives easier. If we wanted a hard life we would dispense with government and go back to the days of survival of the fittest which by its nature would immediately exclude the bloated politicians fat on the backs of the working classes sweat.

The Chinese continue to exploit labour both in their own country and those countries they have extended their influence into. That is what Jeremy likes the most. Question-When is a communist not a communist? Answer-When George Osborne calls, cap in hand, begging for money for new, nuclear power stations. Why is Georgy Boy not a traitor to his country?

How hard has Jeremy Hunt ever worked? I am sure James Naughtie’s Freudian slip actually got his name right! Like Cameron he was a PR merchant. Also fiddled his expenses. Had to apologise for remarks about the Hillsborough tragedy. Failed an attempt to sell marmalade to Japan. All in all a waste of space and a true Tory!

So they wish to model our society by mimicking China? At least they are not hiding the fact that they wish the majority to be their slaves.
Ironic really.. The Tories appear to have started a love affair with the Chinese 'communist' party. lol wat?

Perhaps it should start on the backbenches of the House of Commons, who work six hours a day, four days a week, 150 days a year. That's about half of what most people do, for double the pay. True, ministers and committee members do more, but let efficiency start in the House.

Well according to Jeremy Hunt they work as hard as the Americans and he want's the UK to learn from both !
I wonder how many other Tory cabinet members are thinking of praising the extreme Left ? After all China is a Communist State.
It seems the Tories will use almost any sound byte they can to promote their evil unpopular policies, if that means praising communism then they do it. What kind of hypocrite does this ?
One that has no scruples and Worships money over everything, it is not a Government we have in power in this Country it is a Mafia !

All good Tories defer to power. Osborne and Cameron have quite publicly stated they want to be China's bitches. England is nothing more than a snivelling client state. But if they are looking for anything other than scraps from the Warlord's table, they'll be sorely disappointed. China has been rebuilt by trillions in foreign money in recent decades. It has stolen hundreds of technologies, grabbed the cash, dragged itself out of the gutter and without a hint of conscience, humanity of bacis common decncy, is now strutting about as if it did it all itself! China would still be a third world country were it not for The West. But that fact has not registered with them, because they have something wrong with them.

I have lived in China more than 13 year, my wife is also Chinese and I have come to the conclusion that Jeremy Hunt is a moron. First he was claiming the Chinese family values are better than ours and now he is saying that we are lazy and the Chinese are not. I can assure you that both claims are false. Chinese working hours are no different than our own, they also take a 2 hour sleep at midday. Chinese are notorious clock watchers and never work more than they have too. Their productivity is far lower than workers in the west. Finding workers is difficult as workers are constantly moving and changing employment and are unreliable. Petty pilfering and corruption is rampant. The list goes on.
I know of many companies that are now fed up with China and are planning to relocate elsewhere or down size their Chinese operation.
If Jeremy is also so fond of brown nosing the Chinese should also follow with these stories;
A family decided to go out for dinner at a local outdoor barbeque. The son, aged 12, chose the lamb kebab. That evening he suffered severe abdominal pains and started to bleed for his nose and mouth. He died later that evening. It was discovered that the lamb was in fact rat that had been killed by rat poison.
A young man went to hospital and was diagnosed with cancer. He was prescribed a cause of very expensive tablets. The problem was he did not have cancer and the tablets killed him. The hospital payed his mother $1000 to go away.
Two restaurants, one successful, one not. So the owner of the least successful restaurant crept in his competitors kitchen and laced the soup with rat poison. 14 people were hospitalized. Luckily none died.
2000 children this year in Dong Guan alone have been kidnapped and sold.
As the Secretary of State for health he should know that when he opens his mouth, his foot should not enter. Or perhaps he’s trying to impress his Chinese wife and hopefully get his leg over.

Sound like a script with the usual claims of living in China for a long period of time (over 13 years) and having a Chinese wife for credibility. Next time, one should show more sympathy instead of commenting like a drama being staged.
Why did one decide to live in such a horrible place as claimed for so long? Even if it is true, I bet you were one over there to exploit the poor or an exile in the habit of badmouthing, no?
Bad things do happen, more so in poor countries, and aren't you blind not seeing progress being made over the years. I guess not. Sad.

I don't see that you have the right to accuse a complete stranger of exploiting the poor on no evidence at all. People have all sorts of motives for living abroad and assuming the worst about them says a lot about your own unpleasant character.
Your comment is also very confusing. Who do you think nsb should show more sympathy to? The unfortunate victims of official neglect? The Chinese Communist party? Or who?
You seem to forget that very recently in China many people died horribly in a fire that could have been avoided by basic rules of safety; that dozens of human rights lawyers are still missing after being abducted by the authorities; that when factories are running behind schedule on an order, local children are dragged in to work 12+ hours a day.
But then your attitude seems to be that shit happens. Thank goodness not everyone is like you or we'd all still be living in caves.

I'm married to a Filipina. Before I met her she had a job in a clothing factory and her hours of work were 8am to 4 am. That's 4am the following morning, 20 hours a day. The pay for these hours was about £150 a month. Bearing in mind that jobs are not easy to come by and anyone with a job is expected to support their extended family it's not enough to live on, even in the Philippines. Is that how we want to live or is there more to life than just work?

We will soon catch the Chinese up as the Tories demolish the benefit system maybe that's the plan. People will be shoving the kids up chimneys soon to make up the wages .I have heard that collecting plastic carrier bags can now be quite profitable. How many hours are their in a day ? Maybe Mr Hunt can lengthen them along with working hours.

What I saw over there is that working hours depend on job - same as in UK. Yes, they probably work slightly longer hours than U,K but I think this is exaggerated somewhat.
At same time, they're moving to fewer & fewer hours as China transforms to a modern advanced country . UK, apparently, is moving backwards ??

This report is flawed as it measures "migrant workers" and not ordinary workers born in the city they work in. Migrants are also at the lowest end of the working class and usually engaged in construction works then move on when the project is finished.
Consider this: the one child policy in China has created a spoiled generation of educated professionals. It is now not uncommon for younger staff to opt out of the workplace in China althogether, live with their parents to "study English" (in reality, surfing the web) than deal with the hassle to get up each day to go to the office. Many professionals in China are becoming lazy as the country has become more wealthy.

Let's not forget that in China the state sets desired employment levels and then creates the jobs necessary whether or not the product is selling at a profit. They've built huge cities that are vacant and make more steel than the world can use and then leave it stacked in big piles to rust. The problem in Britain is that there are more workers than jobs and way too much capital is tied up at the top 1% and not moving through the economy to spur aggregate demand. The country needs a massive investment in infrastructure to spur growth and the Tories seem to think building flats for the super rich in London will somehow deliver the goods.

I think the point that hunt is making is very clear to any impartial person.
The analogy with Chinese culture is one of a sense of the need to work to support oneself and the wider family.
Hard to argue with really isn't it? But naturally you have had a good go.
