A new directive from China’s media regulators has prohibited films and TV that promote a “western lifestyle”. Issued on Monday by the State Administration for Press Publishing Radio Film and Television the guidelines also warn against the dangers of making shows and movies that satirise classic works of Chinese literature and encourage decadent behaviour.

一个来自中国媒体监管部门的新指示，就是禁止电影和电视里宣扬“西式生活方式”。中国新闻出版广电总局周一发布的政策警告作秀节目和电影讽刺中国古典文化和鼓励颓废行为是很危险的。

The state-owned Xinhua news agency explains that such lapses will mean programmes and films are outlawed should they appear to cheerlead for “vulgar” values. The ruling also extends to the news agenda of TV shows according to Xinhua:

国家新华新闻通讯社解读，这种错误行为意味着节目和电影是非法的，因为它们有鼓励“庸俗”价值观的嫌疑。据新华社消息，电视新闻同样适用于该规定。

They should also avoid putting stars billionaires or internet celebrities on pedestals; or sensationalising private affairs relationships or family disputes.

Moreover social and entertainment news products must not advocate overnight fame wealth parade or hedonism selfishness or intrigue.

Licenses will be revoked should such moral codes be broached.

Instead films and TV shows “must be dominated by mainstream ideologies and ‘positive energy’.”
New draft legislation is also currently under review which requires film industry personnel to strive for “excellence in professional skills and moral integrity” and seek to aspire to “core socialist values”.

Sort of ghosts arent very organising though.
Either way its true.theres a long list of banned films old and new - for example Noah Ghostbusters Pirates of the Carribean i believe even Schindler's List was banned as it was deemed sympathetic to the Jewish cause...!?... Instead the poor sods who live there get 'positive energy' whatever that might mean. Smile or else?
And if you are Christian or gay keep very very quiet about it.

It's easy to be flippant about these new guidelines but they do have a chilling effect. One thing to note: they don't replace old guidelines they add to them. So Chinese film makers have another set of abstract ill-defined criteria that can kill years of work because the certifying official is overly-officious corrupt or just hung over after a night at the KTV. It's hard enough to get films made and released here as it is making it harder will only reduce quantity rather than increase quality.

A lot of shows on Chinese TV or on the Internet are indeed vulgar and disgusting much like some American reality shows.
While the official directory seems heavy handed and awkward I won't miss those shows.
On the other hand I won't miss any those fantasy "Resistance of Japanese Invasion "TV dramas which are completely unrealistic and untrue to historical facts( in regarding that the Japanese army were portrayed as pushover toy soldiers).

许多中国电视上播的或网上的电视剧的确粗俗令人生厌，简直就像美国的真人秀节目。
虽然中国官方指令看起来粗暴笨拙，但是我也不会对这些垃圾节目感到可惜。

Man I hope those shows never go away. The ever-escalating insanity of how the cowardly Japanese soldiers get murdered is endlessly entertaining. Any day now I expect a show where a 90 year old Hunanese granny massacres 100 Japanese armed only with a hair clip and a confused rooster.

Whatever we do let's make sure we don't offend the Chinese. No Kitchen Sink drama and no talking pigs... Everything they do is only for the good and happy life of the people and we should certainly portray that in any film or tv show that has an eye on the Chinese market.

However "Western values" are known to wipe out entire populations. China does want to shrink its population no?
Then embrace "western values" and people will have no more envy to have babies at all. Isn't it a simpler method than enforcing the one baby policy by law and police?

On one hand I understand the need.
On the other hand it is totally narrowing freedom of expression. Why does it have to be such an ultimatum? why cant they at least give a little scope for independent expression be it a western type of will smith blockbuster or a ridiculous comedy.
in doing this china will only provoke rebellion.

I think one could make a decent argument for the more explicit dumbing down of America to coincide with reality shows I distinctly remember MTV shifting from music to reality the rise of Jerry Springer and watching OJ's Bronco down the highway and thinking " this is not good" and here we are some 20 years later cultural apocalypse.Now it's those that scream the loudest make fools of themselves that embrace shallowness and idiocy that get all the attention. I'm not a fan of Chinese cultureat allbut maybe they just might have something here.

They need to do something about it in China. I don't have a TV but a TV streaming app on my laptop. 100 channels of crap only the movie channel is worth a watch that and sports.
Though they (the government) could do without the ideological nonsense featured at the end of the article. Usually ignored anyway.
