The world's largest ship elevator has been unveiled at the Three Gorges Dam in central China. 

世界最大升船机在中国中部的三峡大坝揭开面纱。

The elevator can lift vessels up or down 370 feet in order to pass the dam across the Yangtze River in Hubei Province.

这个升船机可以将船只升降370英尺从而通过这座大坝。



The 550ft-high structure is able to lift vessels carrying a weight of up to 3,000 tonnes. 

这座550英尺高的结构能将重达3000吨的船只升起。

The new elevator cuts down the time it takes to pass the dam to around 40 minutes, compared to the four hours it takes to pass via the ship lock, CCTV reported. 

这个新的升降机将通过大坝的时间削减到了40分钟左右，而之前通过船闸的话要4小时。



It is believed that the hi-tech elevator will increase the shipping capacity of vessels passing the dam by six million tonnes a year. A trial operation began last week. 

据信，通过这个高科技升降机，每年通过大坝的船只装货容量将增加600万吨。

Passenger ships, cruise ships and small cargo ships will be able to use the new ship elevator.

However, larger ships will still have to use the five-chamber lock to pass through.

The ship elevator has been in the pipeline for over two decades, but the project was put on hold in 1994 due to safety concerns. Construction work began again in 2008.

Vessels are lifted in a chamber that measures 120 metres long, 18 metres wide and 3.5 metres deep.

The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world and was completed in 2012.

I agree with what most here have said about china and it's products etc... but you have to admit, that is one huge pile of engineering right there. The whole thing. Just massive. Don't underestimate them, because if we ever have to tangle with them.....

Hate to tell the writers of the esteemed DM that ship tonnage is based on dimensions NOT physical weight... Multiple ships of the same tonnage could be vastly different as they are totally dependent on design and construction materials utilized.
