Theoretical physicist went on five-and-a-half month voyage Middle and Far East
Chinese are 'filthy' and 'obtuse' who squat to eat like Europeans on the toilet
It would be 'a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races', said Einstein
This would be 'dreary' adding that the Chinese have 'abundance of offspring'
Albert Einstein's private diaries reveal the iconic scientist's racist attitudes on a trip to Asia in the 1920s.
In the autumn of 1922, Albert Einstein, along with his then-wife, Elsa, embarked on a five-and-a-half-month voyage to the Far East and Middle East, regions that the renowned physicist had never visited before.
Einstein's lengthy itinerary consisted of stops in Hong Kong and Singapore, two brief stays in China, a six-week whirlwind lecture tour of Japan and a twelve-day tour of Palestine.
The diaries have been published first time as a standalone volume in English by Princeton University Press, including facsimiles of the diary pages.
Einstein, who once described racism as 'a disease of white people', describes the Chinese as 'industrious, filthy, obtuse people', The Guardian reported.
'Chinese don't sit on benches while eating but squat like Europeans do when they relieve themselves out in the leafy woods.
'All this occurs quietly and demurely. Even the children are spiritless and look obtuse.'
He also writes of the 'abundance of offspring' and the 'fecundity' of the Chinese.
'It would be a pity if these Chinese supplant all other races. For the likes of us the mere thought is unspeakably dreary.'
He says of the Chinese 'even those reduced to working like horses never give the impression of conscious suffering. A peculiar herd-like nation…often more like automatons than people.'
In Colombo, in what was then called Ceylon and now Sri Lanka, Einstein says the locals 'live in great filth and considerable stench at ground level' adding that they 'do little, and need little. The simple economic cycle of life'.
He does appear to have more favourable impression of the Japanese who he says are 'unostentatious, decent, altogether very appealing'.
'Pure souls as nowhere else among people. One has to love and admire this country.'
The Travel Diaries of Albert Einstein have been edited by Ze'ev Rosenkranz, senior editor and assistant director of the Einstein Papers Project at the California Institute of Technology.
'I think a lot of comments strike us as pretty unpleasant - what he says about the Chinese in particular,' he told The Guardian.
'They're kind of in contrast to the public image of the great humanitarian icon. I think it's quite a shock to read those and contrast them with his more public statements. They're more off guard, he didn't intend them for publication.'
The diaries have only previously been published in German as part of the 15-volume Collected Papers of Albert Einstein.

I wouldn't want my life and legacy to be judged on the things I said during my initial first 2 days in Marrakech having encounted unscrupulous taxi drivers and endured the biggest culture shock in my life of 25 years at the time. I've returned back there 3 times since though and now date a Syrian Muslim girl so that should tell you that things are always more complicated than a few lines in an old diary. Leave the man's legacy alone please.

Oh Jesus. Here they go to attack another one! Look. It was the past. Attitudes were different then. All that matters now is the present, and that we learn that attitudes back then were not acceptable. That's why history is important, we learn from our mistakes.
El Capitano
Are we actually learning from our mistakes though? I agree that we should but are we actually? Hard to learn about the ugly if you hide it..
no... just no
What attitude? He was calling it as he saw it! Seems pretty accurate.

What mistakes, exactly, have we "learned" from?

It's a cop-out to say it doesn't matter cause it was a long time ago.

Making notes of what he saw and what he perrceived is not racism????
FullThrottle
Exactly, it was a different time, and PC hadn't been invented, the man was just commenting on what he saw. At least he had freedom of speech back then.

It is if you rationalize it enough
Right to bare
Exactly, it used to be considered ones opinion, or god forbid, their freedom of speech, before we turned into such a PC world! No one is allowed either these days, for fear of "hurting feelings"! Sick of it......get over it world. Not everyone has to like everyone, or agree with anyone!

When do we start taking statues down and removing his name from association with relativity ?
Lisa R
i was JUST going to say the same thing! now it's time to erase him from history because he wasn't politically correct. Anyone who owned slaves hundreds of years ago in the US has been erased from history and all statues taken down.

'Squares' are elitist, reminiscent of the priveliged classes of 18C London. The formula is now officially reformulated by Diane Abbott as e = mc cubed.
Coldhero72
And here we go....seems like he is next on the lefts list to be erased. Everyone else catching on to what they are trying to do yet? Isn't it about time it was stopped.

Just par for the course in that day and age - move on. Just this rag trying to denigrate a genius. PS next genius stand up to be pilloried

It was merely an observation of his. He was not there long, so he was not able to undstand their culture. I don't see this as a big deal. The same may have been said about Americans during the depression.

I will wager that 100 years from now people will read what are considered politically correct articles and diaries of today with horror. The world moves on. You can only judge someone against the language, attitudes and behaviour of THEIR time.

I'm Chinese. His observations are not incorrect in the context of the time and people he met on his travels. What's the point of this article? Today is a different time and place. Can we focus on today instead?

Did these people pointing fingers travel through those countries at the same time as Mr. Einstein? Perhaps his observations, abhorrent to the snowflake mentality today, were correct at the time. He doesn't appear to be removed from the reality by writing from afar, but actually immersed himself there. I've been to absolutely horrid places in the US, and in Mexico, and in other countries. You can't have EVERY place be a paradise. There are disgusting people who live in filth. Get used to reality.
