China has urged Washington to deny Taiwan’s president entry to the United States as Donald Trump’s protocol-shredding conversation with Tsai Ing-wen continued to create frictions between the world’s two largest economies.

川普接通台湾领导人电话让中美关系显得更加紧张了，而就在这时中国敦促华盛顿禁止台湾领导人进入美国。

Tsai, who was elected Taiwan’s first female leader in January, is expected to fly through the US next month en route to a three-country tour of Central America with stops in Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador.

一月当选的蔡英文预计将于下个月飞经美国前往中美洲三国，分别是尼加拉瓜，危地马拉和萨尔瓦多。

There has been speculation – denied by a number of Trump advisers – that she may stop over in New York for a meeting with the US president-elect ahead of his 20 January inauguration.

Hard to side with China on this one. Telling other countries who they can and can't talk to is not democratic. If they were supplying weapons to them that's one thing but having a conversation is quite another - I'm sure we still get items that are 'Made in Malaysia' so I expect Trump is just looking for a new country to have his 'hats made in' ...

Interesting how many people banging on about Trump doing the right thing by supporting a democratically elected government are the same people calling for an alliance with Russia and Assad against ISIS, both regimes that liquidate their opponents. Look, I'm all for a realist policy where your national interest is given greatest priority, but don't give me cafeteria style democracy promotion as if you actually believe it.

Taiwan is an independent country and has been since the revolution took over the legal government in China. I think it is stupid to maintain this charade for the Chinese to save face. It is a relic that should be consigned to history. I am not in anyway a Trump supporter but in issues like this he might do better than the kowtowing diplomats in applying common sense.

That's kind of difficult since Taiwan would first have to declare its independence and give up its claim to the mainland. Because the official position of the country is still that they are the only legitimate Chinese government and they officially call themselves the Republic of china. the population identifies more and more as Taiwanese and not Chinese and a recent survey showed that 51% favoured independence but unless they officially declare their independence no country can recognize it.

So China wants another country to refuse to admit someone through its border, even though that person has done nothing that would justify that? Surely the right response to that is just 'go away, none of you business'? If China wants to repress Taiwanese' ability to travel, they could at least man up and restrict their exit, rather than trying to bully other countries into refusing them entry.

I don't really understand the president of Taiwan. Is she interested in provoking a war between the US and China on... her soil? Her activities suggest so, especially in a situation of heightening tensions between the US and China (and for a long term at that).

As far as I know she didn't expect the call to be made public. She does favour independence though and has gone on a more confronting course with Beijing compared to her predecesssor.
