Paris authorities restricted traffic in the city for a second day after a “lid of pollution” sealed the capital causing concern over public health.

Photographs showed a grey veil of dirty air trapped over the city masking the horizon and at times landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower. Experts said it was the longest most intense spike in pollution for at least 10 years and was expected to continue for at least another day if not longer.

High levels of pollutant gases and fine lead particles can cause asthma allergies breathing difficulties and heart diseases.

I haven't been to Paris in awhile but I imagine that a large majority of people wouldn't ride the metro if the city paid them to.

I take metro/ underground pretty much everywhere I travel if there is one. I've used London/ Paris/ Rome/Prague/ Moscow/ St.Petersbourg/ New York ones. New York was the scariest experience by far.

What a joke. I would have thought that with the Paris agreement on climate change the Parisians would be running the cleanest lowest carbon city on earth but apparently not.

It's not that lefties hate the other view; it's that your view is incoherent wildly misinformed and malevolent toward the most vulnerable people around the world who will suffer from the consequences of Trump's environmental policies. If you read the story Paris' problem is due to peculiar weather conditions (Anchorage Alaska has terrible air too because of its geography). It's also a dense crowded city; it's trying to do something about it by banning diesel and encouraging more bicycle use. The truth is that the Bozo's in Europe have done an extraordinary job reducing greenhouse gases and pollution switching to renewable and cleaner energy using public transportation and so on. On every front imaginable Europe has done better than North America (where I live) and Australia given its population density and high standard of living. Europe's current problems are not driven by its forward-thinking energy policies or its refugee intake but by the irrational xenophobia and knuckle-dragging anti-environmentalism that prevents the continent from moving forward.

Paris is taking some action unlike London or Birmingham or... any UK city.
You have to reduce absolutely lorries and buses and cars day in day out. Let's do that first then see if public transport can cope if not improve it electric busses etc.

Mayor Kahn has frozen public transport fairs made second bus journeys free within the same hour as his first act announced a big increase in cycle infrastructure spending is banning the most polluting lorries & extending the clean air zone.
Within the limits of his powers & considering he was only elected this summer that's not a terrible start.

As a London daily cyclist I've noticed the last week has been unusually nasty. My instinct to skip a breath normally only triggered by going past a heavy vehicle accelerating has been triggered regularly from centre to south East.

Unlike the American cities Paris actually has decent public transportation. I am surprised by the level of pollution which seems to be higher than in American cities when American cities have many more cars.

It's an inversion layer phenomenon that doesn't happen often in most US metropolitan areas - I recall being in one once hears ago that affected the whole San Francisco Bay area fortunately only for a few days. It happens pretty frequently in Grenoble because of its geography less so in Lyon and Paris. It's not really a matter of too many cars polluting - though one could argue that any is too many - but a matter of what pollution is dumped into the air being trapped in a relatively thin layer near the ground.
