THE BRITISH war hero who won fame as “the man who sank the Bismarck” has died aged 97.

被誉为“击沉俾斯麦的男人”的不列颠战争英雄于97岁去世。

Royal Navy pilot Lieutenant Commander John “Jock” Moffat launched the torpedo that crippled the pride of Hitler’s fleet during the Second World War.

皇家海军飞行员少校John “Jock” Moffat在二战中发射的鱼雷打残了这艘希特勒舰队的骄傲。

The air strike, carried out by biplanes from HMS Victorious and Ark Royal on 26 May 1941, was said to have been Britain’s last hope of stopping the German battleship before it retreated to the safety of waters off the coast of France.

In a last throw of the dice, Mr Moffat’s flimsy Swordfish bi-plane survived a torrent of bullets and shrapnel to deliver its deadly payload in the stormy Atlantic.

Mr Moffat, who was aged just 21, skimmed the surface of the waves as he flew in at just 50ft to get the best possible angle of attack on the ship.

His torpedo crippled the Bismarck, destroying its rudder.

The battleship was forced to steam in circles until the guns of the Royal Navy’s home fleet arrived the next morning to finish her off.

Mr Moffat once said of the mission: “When Churchill gave the order to sink the Bismarck, we knew we just had to stop her trail of devastation at all costs.

His bravery during the hunt for the warship – named after Germany’s founding father Otto von Bismarck – has gone down in British military history.

Mr Moffat’s role in the attack was later immortalised in classic war film Sink the Bismarck!

Born in the Scottish town of Kelso in June 1919, Mr Moffat joined the Navy as a reservist in 1938 aged 19.

He was posted to Ark Royal with 759 Naval Air Squadron after qualifying as a pilot.

In recent years he campaigned for the No side in the Scottish independence referendum, appearing alongside Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson in 2014 to make the defence case for the Union.

Announcing Mr Moffat’s death, the Royal Navy said it had lost “one of its greatest heroes”.

Swordfish pilot Jock Moffat – credited with launching the torpedo which crippled the Bismarck in 1941 – has died at the age of 97.

The Scotsman, who always played down his role in the attack, was a lifelong champion of naval aviation and friend of the Fleet Air Arm.

The torpedo dropped by his Swordfish at dusk on May 26 1941 jammed the rudder of Hitler’s flagship.

Why do we have so few Mr Moffatts in parliment, is it that we dont vote for them, or that they wont grubby their hands dealing with other politicians, either way it is our loss, Mr Moffat would have made an excellent PM compared to the low lifes that inhabit our leaders chairs. Am glad that he lived to see the United Kingdom saved and Brexit which I am sure he would have supported.

At 21, I was an immature idiot ( the Missus still reckons I am !).
Then there's real men, like Mr. Moffatt, who were continually putting themselves in harms way, facing death, and  fighting for their country, many of which didn't get home.
What a generation and what a debt we of today owe them , a debt that will never be repaid.
