Last year the world’s largest market for both legal and illegal ivorysaid it would shut down commercial saleswithin the country. But did not set a timeline.

At the time conservationists described the announcement as the“single greatest measure”in the fight to save elephants from poaching. Wildlife advocates have sinceurged Beijing to get on with the job.

“The preparation for the domestic ivory trade ban is under way in China” Zhou Fei head of the China programme at wildlife trade watchdog Traffic told the Guardian. “According to our information most of the legal ivory vendors are developing alternative business. The ivory price of both legal and illegal ivory products dropped.”

Legal ivory carvers in China use tusks imported during one-off sanctioned sales from Africa. Advocates for the total ban believe it will discourage local demand for black market ivory and shut off smugglers’ attempts to launder poached tusks into legal markets.

That's a very upsetting photograph... especially if you picture the elephant that was left dying after the tusks were hacked off never mind the rangers who were murdered.

“China often resists legislation for as long as possible then acts when the diplomatic costs become too high. But that is not the same as effective enforcement. China is a very big country Beijing’s reach is less effective than many outsiders imagine and enforcement may not be a priority” said Hilton.

About the most perceptive and intelligent thing I've seen for ages. Most people don't even ask themselves "What is the social difference between Japan and China?". How can anybody know anything if they don't ask questions?

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall should really cook a dinner for the likes of Jack Ma and Li Ka-Shing if he wants to get a bit further with the ivory problem.

How about if someone organizes special charity fund-raising dinners in Shanghai and Guangzhou for elephants in Shanghai and Guangzhou with Hugh F-W collaborating in the chef-planning where he gets to meet them all?

We'll see. Banning things is often little more than a way of creating a new revenue stream for Party chiefs. If it's legal they've no reason to take a bribe to look the other way.

Such a good well thought out idea one that would certainly smooth the path for these reprobate human beings to continue in their task of eliminating these wonderful sentient creatures from earth.

Irrespective of whatever steps China takes you would still blame China. The article says that Europe is the biggest legal exporter of ivory in the world. Now do you blame the drug traffickers or the drug addicts?

The pledge to ban the domestic ivory trade was an excellent initial step taken by China and it is encouraging that it is now actually close to announcing when it will take effect. These moves should be applauded while at the same time remaining vigilant for signs of effective action given the skepticism outlined.
But it is very hard to see how westerners can continue to point fingers at China while there is any trade lingering in the UK and Europe. The pretext of 'old ivory' is simply a fig leaf for maintaining the value of ivory in public perceptions and as Hugh F-W's documentary showed for laundering new ivory under the guise of antiques.
The principle must be established and adhered to: ivory has no value except on elephants.

It is repulsive to know that every ivory tusk has resulted in the death of a magnificent animal.

do not necessary to think so as there are a lot of ivory coming from natural death. in fact ivory is something that occurring naturally.

"Last year the world’s largest market for both legal and illegal ivory said it would shut down commercial sales within the country"
Is it good?
As it is then why not follow the Chinese example to shut down all commercial sales in your own American sphere regime land?

Maybe we should take a closer look at the U.K.! Since they're the ones blocking protection on the highest level for these animals. China may get more serious if the UK actually stopped wanting to kill the elephants! To see a supposed advanced society like the UK fighting and voting to NOT protect elephants in a day where they are getting closer to extinction by the day is seriously disgusting! How about pointing all your finger at them? Then maybe China who buys their ivory from the UK wouldn't have anything left to buy!

What world do you live in? I want to see sources to say that China buys ivory from the UK.
Do you know how wealthy China is?
Every man woman and child on their half day of work could make a rifle leave their factory cities and fly to africa and then return back with several tusks.
I would believe alot of things but one thing I don't believe is that we sell something to China that isn't the royal family or tea bags.

China seems to be the scourge of all the world's wildlife.
Pangolins tigers (and now lions too) saiga 5 species of rhino bears 3 species of elephant vaquita and many many more.
If you want to do something about it (because ours and the US governments won't) then the only power you have is just don't buy Chinese.
