The US is suffering from a dangerous shortfall in active members and needs 30000 more on board to combat threats including Russia China and ISIS the Air Force chief of staff has warned.

General David Goldfein says that the active duty Air Force needs to grow from 317000 - its current size - to 350000. It's currently planned to reach 321000.

Albert the US forces have been 'carrying the water' for NATO almost since its inception. The other NATO countries have been cutting defence budgets continually. UK can only take part in anti-ISIS raids in Syria by 'christmas treeing' broken down aircraft for spares to keep 3 or 4 flying from Cyrus. The UK forces are now down to ~150 thousand and still shrinking as the world is becoming more dangerous. You should be asking how would we survive if seriously attacked. This on the day it was announced that 7000 ISIS members are thought to be in the refugees that Merkel let into Germany and no-one knows where they are. Some of them could be in Manchester town centre right now.
