Government to make it easier for firms abroad to invest in China and tougher for Chinese companies to buy assets overseas to contain capital outflow

Beijing has signalled plans to curb Chinese firms’ investment in foreign assets after revealing that companies from China are on course to spend 1.12 trillion yuan (￡130bn) on everything from British football clubs to a Hollywood film producer in 2016.

Like a big old self fulfilling prophecy.

And it's exactly why our government(s) need to stand up to this overflow of dubious capital and instead allow our property market to do what it should: house our citizens rather than serve as a vehicle to enrich Chinese investors.

The average American has 4x the wealth of the average Chinese person. Let's see if the authoritarians are able to do anything more than catch up (using market mechanisms borrowed from the West) and beat the middle income trap to surpass the liberal version.

Everyone knows -- or at least just about everyone believes -- that the RMB is going to fall probably to parity with the Hong Kong dollar and perhaps below. So of course folks want to get their money out of an asset which seems to have plenty of downfall potential. Perhaps we'll soon return to the days of black-market traders on the streets approaching every foreign face.

Those western-made "investigative" reports on ghost cities are looking at it with purely western eyes. First no one (except perhaps deep inside the PRC treasury) knows the true scale: the 64 million is a very shaky number (and about 5 years old too). Second it is normal in China to buy unfinished apartments and leave them that way--it may look scary to a westerner but it is normal in China. Third they have very few outlets for their savings (and bank savings are earning well behind inflation) so a lot goes into these apartments. It is an asset bank. Fourth there are about 600 million poor Chinese yet to clamber up the economic ladder. So put those numbers next to each other and it is not so scary (well it is scary just not in the same way).

There is almost nothing in history to make analogies to what has and is happening in China. But think about the building of the continental railway pushing west in the US in the mid-19th century. The builders funded it because they were granted land along its route and the stations turned into major cities in the next 50 years (or sooner).

Really this is just another sign that a great economic crisis is coming in China in the next few years. The Chinese realise (consciously unconsciously?) that their money is really only paper and they are trying to get it out of China whilst they can.

This is most confusing. You have the countries like Australia and USA claiming it is Chinese government`s evil strategy to buy up foreign assets and it must be stopped. Now this article is almost saying Chinese government believes it is some kind of evil plot to lure them to buy foreign assets and it must be stopped. Is it just great minds think alike or are all these claims just political convenience?
