With China on course to become the world’s biggest box-office market within two or three years Hollywood studios have been tripping over each other for a ticket to ride what Stephen Colbert recently dubbed“the pander express”. It’s hard not to be cynical when efforts to engage Chinese audiences usually seem to involve such screenwriting masterstrokes as getting your giant robots to lay waste to Shanghai instead of San Francisco or some lantern-jawed action hero displaying an unlikely taste for hanzi-labelled soy milk. The world of cinema is supposedly bracing itself for complete realignment but you could be forgiven for thinking the only people benefiting at the moment are washed-up American directors on the funding trail and Chinese stars you’ve never heard of looking to raise their global profile. But it’s time to look closer – billions of dollars and soft-power pre-eminence are on the table. Here are 10 parties with big stakes in Hollywood’s drive eastwards:

Business-wise it makes sense for a lot of people but culture-wise the idea of one country making movies for another one on the other side of the globe is completely ridiculous.

Back in the 80s Hollywood made movies with pretty much just America in mind. It often led to a rather blxered and slightly racist world view but those movies
are equally often remembered as all-time classics because they weren't unfocussed messes struggling to appeal to as many global target markets as possible.

Only 34 foreign films are allowed into the country each year under the quota system – and the studios receive only 25% of the profits under a revenue-sharing scheme (around half of their takeaway elsewhere). China Film Group the state-film behemoth is the only sanctioned film importer and takes about 22% of the proceeds for the pleasure.

What people don't seem to know is that the international markets where Hollywood makes the most money is Asia. China is the 2nd biggest market for American films then Japan then South Korea and the UK is 5th.

Hollywood is slowly embracing diversity as Disney has a record breaking year in movie income for embracing diversity overtly but the Asian market is the biggest obstacle to diversity in American films. For some reason East Asians love movies with white characters but not other ethnic minorities outside their own. It was a famous story that in the on the Asian posters of Star Wars The Force Awakens they took John Boyega off the posters because they felt it would damage box office in Asia because they don't like seeing black people in movies. A famous American critic said Fantastic Beasts was the whitest major blockbuster she had seen in the last 4 years yet it was the American blockbuster that did the best in China. She said Asians do themselves no favours because it tells Hollywood white washing of Asian stories characters and properties is acceptable because Asian audiences love movies about white people.

So it is a double edge sword. In the historical Japanese story 47 Ronin they inserted Keanue Reeves as the Eurasian main character. Edge Of Tomorrow the story of a Japanese soldiers soldiers fighting aliens in Tokyo suddenly became Tom Cruise and Emily blunt fighting aliens in London. Ghost In the Shell cast the Robot lead with an Asian name as Scarlet Johansson and the worst of all is the move 21 the true story of Asian American students taking on the casinos suddenly became a biopic where the Asian students became white students. This is before you talk other movies like Last Airbender and Dragon Ball Z that whitewashed Asian iconic characters. It is going to continue with Di Caprio going into production about re-making the Japanese manga Akira with him as Akira. If Asian audiences support movies with whitewashing then it is going to happen. When African Americans boycotted Gods Of Egypt and Exodus for still trying to portray Egyptians as white when they never were both movies flopped and Hollywood stopped the production on all movies that portrayed Egyptians as white. So maybe Asians needs to calm down on their white western obsession for their own cultural health.

Personally I see this putting on pedestal of white western culture in East Asian countries a result of the colonialism and historical military defeats by Western Powers has greatly damaged the Asian psyche where they seek validation of their culture in White Westerners.

As far as I can see it's just silly Kung Fu Panda and other rubbish entertainment or stereotypes and popularism. Films designed to appeal to a Chinese audience will never really work.

Obviously Hollywood. Seeing as China often doubles takings imagine all these expensive blockbusters minus this massive new Chinese income. Half of them wouldn't even turn a profit.

It's glaringly obvious there has been countless column inches generated by the China question. So the by word pay of critics has had a big boost. Do you always require everything spelt out?

Instead of pandering to Americans they are pandering to the Chinese im trying to work put why i should care? Pacific Rim sequel you say? Ok im in.
