Even through Beijing’s nicotine-tinged smog you can make out the multi-coloured frxs gliding through the pea soup towards a greener future.

In recent months an unmissable fleet of fluorescent orange canary yellow and ocean blue bicycles has hit the streets of urban China as part of a hi-tech bike-sharing boom that entrepreneurs hope will make them rich while simultaneously transforming the country’s traffic-clogged cities.

“We want to solve problems by getting bikes back on to the streets of our cities” said Li Zekun the 25-year-old marketing director of Ofo one of the startups spearheading this 21st-century transport revolution.

From Shanghai to Sichuan province bike-sharing schemes are being rolled out on an unprecedented scale in an effort to slash congestion and air pollution by putting a country once known as the “Kingdom of Bicycles” back on two wheels.

It's a positive move. Cars are a destructive force on urban life

Yes but who would choose to cycle through the everyday polluted and dense Beijing schmok? Cycling requires physical effort which makes for deeper breathing which in turn will deposit more carcinogenic petro-chemicals throughout the bicycle rider's lung fields. It's a biological given.
There has to be a better solution.

AQI today 50 classed as good. Yesterday 60 classed as moderate as was the day before. The heavy readings are only about 1/3rd of the time so probably 2/3rds of the time cycling is OK.

As with many areas of life government action is needed first to drive the direction and infrastructure and then the private sector can add a little innovation and variety.

Just shows UK is behind China in this audacious plan. Birmingham for example tiny percentage of bike users few facilities. More needs to be done.

Have you tried riding a bike in China? The drivers are 'unpredictable' to say the least and there are few bike lanes even fewer which are adhrered to. Once they enforce that it will change but up till now it is just death on two wheels (I was in China for over a year and saw at least 3 fatal bike crashes before some Canadian Chinese jumps on some false statistic).

It is a barefaced lie to say there are few bike lanes in China. Most Chinese cities have bike lanes - although it is true they are also used by e-bikes. But overall China is far ahead of the UK in terms of bike lanes.

And yes I do ride a bike in China.

I don't understand why it should be termed as "bike-sharing" because the bicycles aren't owned by individuals who are sharing them they are owned by companies who are running them as a business.

Shouldn't it be "bike-renting" initiative?

Anyhow this is a good initiative for the environment.

you can't share them for free can you?

Interesting business model. By charging up to 300 RMB as a one time deposit before using the bikes they have effectively got the users to pay for them. That is how they can put hundreds of thousands on the streets. Of course the deposit is returnable but as long as the scheme is successful it is the users who are indeed sharing the bikes

That is because most of ofo bikes are second-hand bikes donated or sold by individules to the company. But the Mobike is different its bikes are brand new bikes with high technologie.

There is a certain chance that the world will choke on China's lust for BMW and burgers!

Maybe present Chinese are happier than yesterday's with all their goods.

But I doubt very much that their children will be!

These bikes have popped up everywhere in Shenzhen over the last few months. A lot of people seem to be using them. They're especially useful for bridging the distance from the subway station to your destination.

These bike schemes are not a new thing. They've been going on for some time now. Hangzhou apparently has the biggest in the world. They're located in all the right places. They're unisex. They have baskets. Some even have child seats. Many people in China use folding bikes. Many use electric bikes. Our family has two electric bikes. One with a child seat. It's small and very mobile and great for beating the gridlock.

We have dedicated bike streets and physically separated bike lanes.

Driving cars on ice is also dangerous.
