TOKYO —Eight Chinese military aircraft including strategic bombers were spotted flying over the Tsushima Strait in southwestern Japan on Monday prompting Japan to scramble fighters the Defense Ministry said.

东京消息- 国防部宣称周一有八架中国军用飞机被发现在日本西南部的对马海峡上空飞行，迫使日本战斗机升空拦截。

The group of Chinese planes consisted of six H-6 bombers an early warning plane and an intelligence-gathering plane the ministry said adding there was no violation of Japan’s airspace.

This is the first time since August last year that an H-6 has been detected flying over the strait according to the ministry.

据官方称，这是自去年八月发现一架轰-6飞越海峡之后的首次。

The eight aircraft passed through the southern side of the strait flew over the Sea of Japan in a northeast direction turned around north of Oki Island in Shimane Prefecture and returned to airspace above the East China Sea the ministry said.

官方称，这八架飞机穿过海峡南面沿着东北方向飞过日本海并在岛根县的隐岐岛北部转向回到东海上空。

No violation of Japan's airspace but the big difference between Japan and China - the Japanese don't go around flying 6 bomber aircraft in international airspace and designed to to antagonise. Intelligence gathering - fair enough. 6 bomber aircraft? Maybe the first two posters have a ready excuse for that as well..

I guess the key question is how many similar flights are conducted by combined US / Japan forces as a part of routine surveillance and training?
I don't know but I guess quite a few and they are never reported by media as either un-newsworthy or told not to.
Maybe someone has the answer.

browny1 first of all japan's self defense force doesn't have ANY bombers. second of all the US /Japan forces NEVER uses bombers for routine surveillance flights. surveillance planes are designed to carry radar bombers are designed to carry bombs big difference.
on another note how is it even possible to fly over the tsushima strait without violating japanese airspace? if you guys have seen the tsushima strait on a map then you'll know what i'm talking about.

楼上的，首先，日本自卫队没有任何一架轰炸机。第二，美日联合部队从不把轰炸机用于日常监视飞行。侦察机是用来装载雷达的，轰炸机是装载炸弹的，大有不同。

So to answer gogo and Gaijin's excuse-making posts to clarify the position this means that China flew 6 bombers between Fukuoka and the southern tip of South Korea. International airspace maybe but no excuse whatsoever for China to fly 6 bombers in that area.
