Rex Tillerson, Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of state, has set the stage for a potential clash with China, saying it should be barred from artificial islands it has built in the South China Sea.

川普的国务卿候选人雷克斯·蒂尔纳森已经为与中国发生潜在的冲突做好准备，他说应该禁止中国接近其在南海上建造的人工岛屿。

Tillerson said China’s control and construction of artificial islands in waters claimed by neighbouring countries was “akin to Russia’s taking of Crimea”.

他说中国在有争议海域的控制和造岛行为“类似于俄罗斯吞并克里米亚”。

“We’re going to have to send China a clear signal that, first, the island-building stops and, second, your access to those islands also is not going to be allowed,” Tillerson said during his confirmation hearing to become America’s top diplomat. “They are taking territory or control or declaring control of territories that are not rightfully China’s.”

Particularly given the fact that Israel's settlement policy was rules illegal by the UN decades ago and it causes untold misery to millions of Palestinians. While international protocols and agreement needs to be established regarding building new islands, at least it is not being done at the expense of rendering millions homeless.

They're not "new islands". They've been sitting offshore from Vietnam and the Philippines for a long long time. China stole them - or fulfilled some kind of imperial manifest destiny, if you prefer.

All he needed to say was that they do not recognise these claims, that they will continue to view these waters as international and will act accordingly.

Wouldn't this drive China to encourage North Korea to be hostile? While China's claim to the South China Sea might be controversial or even wrong, certainly the US has no claim. Why would Tillerson think he has the right to make the rules? In fact, if the purpose of keeping the sea open is so that shipping routes to Asia aren't blocked for trade purposes, what is the point if an all-out war is started and trade stops abruptly?

这难道不会导致中国去鼓励朝鲜变得更加富有敌意吗？虽然中国对南海的主权声明是富有争议甚至是错误的，但是南海肯定没有美国的事。为什么蒂尔纳森觉得自己有权制定规则？如果南海开放的目的是为了让通往亚洲的贸易航线不被阻挠，那么一场让贸易瞬间停滞的全面战争又有何意义？
