Four of the top 10 passwords on the list are six characters or shorter meaning cracking software and hardware can easily unscramble them in just a few seconds.

Unless the website deals with the transfer of money or goods or is a store of personal information you do not even need a secure password. For websites such as Daily Mail I use a single reusable password there is no need to secure accounts such as this. You only need a couple of unique and complex passwords anyway. I have three 14 digit passwords that I have committed to memory. One for Google Mail (with two-step verification turned on) another for online banking and the last is my PlayStation network password. Other complex passwords for sites such as Amazon Ebay and PayPal etc are not committed to memory (as I do not use them that often) but stored on a removeable device.

With so many little sites demanding 6 or 8 character passwords you have to use the same password. I have 3 all secure for general use financial transactions and higher-than-average security. A password manager is of limited use when moving between laptops desktops phones and tablets many of which aren't yours. I'm going for the long passphrase option with u/c l/c numbers and proper punctuation. Some sites limit you to 12 chars but 16+ is my aim - to cut down on brute force methods of defeat. Plus other than bank/financial details how many of us have true high security needs? Not most I wager. How many ppl care about your email circuit diagram library and Facebook 'really'? Until a solution to remembering dozens of different passwords is solved people WILL reuse them despite the obvious risk. I do and yet I'm aware of the dsnger and have good passwords for those I use. Biometrics will be the answer but only once every computer can read a fingerprint or scan an iris.

I just knew someone would pick up on that. Of course you're right. It's 999 characters of the 1000 allowed. I also abbreviated 'chars' and upper/lower case too. 'Ppl' is a hangover from IRC days 20 years ago. I try to spell and use grammar correctly so don't disagree with you at all Auntie :)

A decent password manager will sync between phone/laptop/tablet etc. I have at least 200 different passwords for various accounts but all I need to remember is the main one for the password manager. I change that every month. Had it for over five years so that's a lot of changes but like the elephant I never forget. Quite a problem actually I can't forget them.

A passphrase is better than a password. Take a memorable sentence from your life and add special characters and numbers in place of a few alphabets. Ensure that you have more than 16 characters to make brute force attacks harder.

It's mandatory SOP in many companies to change your PW every thirty days PW must be 8 characters long W/2 alphanumeric s upper and lower case and symbols needed. Again this policy is mandatory at the end of 30 days the system will force PW change the system also remembers your last 13 passwords and you cannot reuse the last 13 passwords. Again a simple standard policy.

That's a gripe of mine. So many sites think they're so important yet how vital are your map usages circuit diagram library DTP program etc. This could be addressed by allowing a 'no password necessary' option on many sites. Trouble is the site owners think their application is the next-greatest-thing even if it's a cat/dog age calculator.

I read a great way of coming up with a secure password that you can actually remember. Think of a famous line from a film a book or whatever and take the first letter of each word. You won't forget it but it's actually completely random and hard to guess. For example: "Toto I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" = TIafwniK@
例如:“Toto I've a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore”(首字母)= TIafwniK @

Agreed. That is what I call a passphrase. Or is that something else? As a Coleridge fan I was thinking along the lines of "In Xanadu did Kubla Khan". Caps lower case and punctuation and totally memorable. Prefix it with a '2' (for line 2) if you want a number.
