Russia is to ban anyone born after 2015 from buying cigarettes as part of a long-term plan to eradicate smoking in Russia.

The proposal which has the backing of fitness fan and non-smoker PresidentVladimir Putin would make Russia the first country in the world to completely phase out tobacco.

Every year almost 400000 Russians die of smoking-related diseases but the Tass news agency says the number of smokers has fallen from 41 percent to 31 percent in the last 10 years.

But President Putin and his advisers are keen to stamp out the habit which is not only bad for Russians' health but also bad for their economy.

Smoking has traditionally been popular in Russia but tobacco is not grown there and since Soviet times it has had to be imported from Cuba Georgia or Central Asia.

I think its a good idea I mean look the uk and how deaths from smoking have been reduced massive since the the 50s partly due to health warnings taxes and of course E-cigs (which are the future) yes some will say its a nanny state law off again but end of the day what is more important live or death so hopefully the uk will follow suit helps to wipe of deaths from smoking save millions on the NHS and cost to the UK and even save people a lot of money cause looking at what my friends spend its really get costly by the year so yeah a good idea

I always thought this was the sensible way to stamp out smoking. For instance in Britain anyone born in the 21st century buying or possessing cigarettes could be charged with an offence. Slap on the wrist at first with increasing penalties in future years.
