TOKYO —The National Police Agency and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency are urging elderly people to be careful when eating “mochi” rice cakes during the New Year holidays.
The appeal is made every year at this time. The sticky cakes, a traditional New Year’s food, cause choking incidents among elderly people.
Authorities have advised people to cut up their “mochi” into small chunks and to eat it with great care, and in the presence of someone else.
During the New Year period, families traditionally cook “ozoni” soup and put the rice cakes in the vegetable broth.
The Tokyo Fire Department has a website advising people what to do if they see someone choking on “mochi.”

Yearly warning, and ever so sadly, too many people will literally choke to death because they dont think THEY can't handle it.

What is sad is that adults would have to be "warned" to begin with.

These elderly people see the news (over 50yrs watching this happen)and know people die every year eating mochi, how is warning them gonna change anything? It's like warning people about eating fugu fish, they know they can die but still do it.

Is it that hard to sell smaller bite-sized mochi to reduce the opportunity of choking? I thought that the food industries always liked to sell smaller treats for larger prices, under the guise of being customer appreciative.

the portion size is usually ridiculously dangerous considering the number of people who have died, and who will continue to die

I remember the omochi death count around 70 about 5 years ago. I think it's gone down recently.
