While Japanese families enjoy the Christmas Eve ritual of tucking into fried chicken and sponge cake, millions of love-struck, or simply lustful, couples will discreetly observe another festive tradition with a visit to a love hotel.

当日本家庭在平安夜享受炸鸡和海绵蛋糕时，几百万的情侣会遵守另外一个节日传统，那就是在情侣酒店里过上一夜。

They will enter a dimly lit lobby and, after a brief discussion, select a room with the push of a button. Then, for just a few thousand yen ($25-30) – handed to an unseen receptionist – they will be free to make the most of their fleeting moment of privacy. As soon as they leave, a team of cleaners will prepare the room for the next occupants.

But Japan’s love hotels are suffering from a downturn in demand from amorous couples. Instead, they are pinning their hopes of long-term survival on a surge in the number of Chinese tourists that is stretching the traditional hotel industry to breaking point.

The rise of young people living alone and the need to find rooms for growing numbers of tourists means the seedier attractions are starting to change.

因为现在日本年轻人都开始自己住了，没必要再去情侣酒店，再加上中国游客增多对酒店客房的需求，所以日本这些看起来下流的情侣酒店开始改变自己。

One thing I didn't understand is why they would replace the double beds with singles, who wants a single bed? Even if you travel alone you want a big bed!

Japanese people are shorter, so a single bed is a double to them. A double bed is like a quadruple bed.

And with overpopulation the real danger, and automatisation and robotics on the way, not to mention tech wonders, you don not need humongous numbers of humans to run a country. Depopulation fears are being spread only by dangerous idiots and greedy consumer-fleecers.

Toured around Japan in the mid 90s with a, platonic, female friend and we used love hotels on several occasions as somewhere cheap to stay that didn't need to be reserved.
The decor and in-room vending machines were unusual, to say the least. ?

Some of the carnally?themed English names of these establishments are very memorable. I can recall Moon Rabbit, Ox, and Fuck. Absolutely wonderful.

The stigma attached to sex working really annoys me. The reason humans dominated is partly if not hugely related to their penchant for sex. We are genetically programmed fucking machines. If people in these hotels want to take part, without force, and can leave at any time, then let them be. No need to use the words garish, seedy etc. It's just fucking. It's what we do.
