Underground gangs of Chinese 'brushers' are bombarding British households with cheap goods they did not order in order to boost the prominence of online retailers.

The banned practice known as brushing is illegal in China and the fake sales can improve a company's rankings on online sites such as Alibaba.

Some hack individual users' accounts to order goods while people in Britain have been left baffled after simply receiving items without their knowledge.

Many initially fear they have fallen victim to credit card when they received the cheap often counterfeit goods through their doors.

Melinda Simmons who received two fake Nike sweatshirts from China told James Gillespie for the Sunday Times that she found the situation 'mystifying'.

The gangs take a fee from retailers send cheap designer goods to British homes then often leave good reviews on their websites to boost their reputations.

Increasing sales boost their online presence making the vendor easier to find in the highly competitive world of online retail leading to more sales.

One agent Mr Wang who runs a 'brushing group' claims to make more than £1000-a-month from the business according to the Wall Street Journal.

This article is so poorly written... I can't make head nor tail of this scam!

Simple the site pays people to buy items off their site who then use random address in the UK to send the purchases to, this boosts the popularity of the site and also allows for a fake review... It misleads people into thinking the site is good and safe to use when they look it up but are being tricked into buying fake goods.

One victim here. No response to phone calls or emals nor registered mail to show proof of purchase. I am after 6 weeks still trying to get my money back and still do not understand how that did all happen.

I've bought off Alibaba twice but I wouldn't do again. Yes prices are better than Amazon but if anything goes wrong then you're on your own. Even with detailed photographs and explanations of the problem Alibaba sides with the seller. I should have believed the negative reviews of Alibaba...

There are some items that are impossible to purchase from anywhere in the UK (mostly specialised electronics). I have used Alibaba but would rather pay a premium and buy from any reputable retailer in the UK - at least there's some after sales service and warranty.

Fake designer Jewellery and non leather fake designer bags are fine from there. But stay away from their fake Uggs or any "leather" or "fake fur" items as 9/10 times it's dog or cat skin/fur.

Please boycott Chinese products off ebay. I'm sick of seeing British sellers go out of business because tight fisted Brits want to save a few quid then realise they have brought total tat.

So we should pay almost 3 times the price to a UK seller for an item that THEY bought from China? I think not!
