Jackie Chan’s new film Kung Fu Yoga – a high-profile product of the co-production agreement between China and India signed in 2014 – has come under a barrage of criticism in India for perpetuating outdated and offensive stereotypes.

The film which features Chan as a professor of archaeology who teams up with an Indian counterpart to search for lost treasure in Tibet appears to have gone down well enough in China but Indian critics have been noticeably hostile. The Wire described it as a “series of misfires wearing inauthenticity on its sleeves like a badge of honour” while the Daily O said it “affirms China’s stereotypes about India”. Mid-Day obxted to it as “desi exotica – starring snake charmers and the great Indian rope trick”.

I watched the movie and I liked it quite a bit. And apparently other viewers like it too judging by the box office numbers.

I didn't realize any stereotypes against India obviously this article didn't give any details of exactly how it stereotyped India.

The movie gets me interested in Bollywood. The leading Indian actor is quite handsome and the leading lady is positively gorgeous. I bet the two are a major reason for the movie's success.

The movie is aimed at the Chinese market so it is only natural that the Chinese director has more says to make it.

Kung fu yoga is such an offensive title I'm flabbergasted that the producers would try to combine such contrasting and wholly incompatible activities into one phrase. I'm writing a letter to my mp as we speak!

Indian cinema can hardly speak! It has been stereotyped fare for fifty years - simplistic jokes about the overweight the gay the disabled the single woman the all's-well-that-ends-well mawkish sentimentality - and even films who try to challenge end in syrupy emotion.

All Chan's films are silly stereotypes. It's the type of stupid humour that the Carry On films always used. Why he has to pander to reactionary images I don't know. There is lots of space for genuine humour. I think it's laziness.

We Turks don't live in Grand Bazaar.
Are films actually implying that? Or are they simply filming in well-known locations?
This is cliche not stereotyping.

Nothing new. Jackie Chan him play a stereotype of Chinese all the time. Why the surprise? You dont watch one of his film for a complex portrait of... anything really. You just want to see him kick some butts in a humorous manner.
