Downing Street’s intensifying flirtation with Beijing has yet to develop into a full-blown love affair, Chinese state media has warned, as president Xi Jinping touched down in London for his first state visit to Britain.

Officials in both London and Beijing have trumpeted Xi’s four-day trip, which starts on Tuesday, as the beginning of a “golden time” of relations through which Britain seeks to secure billions of pounds of Chinese investment and China hopes to boost its global reach.

“China attaches great importance to growing relations with the United Kingdom,” Xi said in a statement after landing at Heathrow airport with his wife, Peng Liyuan. “To deepen China-UK relationship is in the fundamental interests of both countries and peoples, and meets the trend of the times.”

In an editorial, the government-run China Daily newspaper predicted that Xi’s time in Britain would feature “many memorable highlights that will almost certainly grab the limelight back home”.

“But his visit is more about diplomatic realism. It is too early to talk about a UK-China ‘love story,’” the English-language newspaper added.

China will be pleased the Britain is so quick and willing to brown nose but it will lose Britain the little respect the 'Central Kingdom' had for this uncultured nation of barbarians. Furthermore, as Britain is villain number one in the CCPs history books due to the Opium wars, a lot more of this kind of fawning will be expected.

Pretty much every country in the world, including the USA, France, Germany, etc kowtows to China in some way or another - otherwise they would all recognise Taiwan (an island of 23+ million people) as an independent country. The fact that it only has official embassies with a number of small countries and often finds it hard to buy defensive arms, especially conventionally-powered submarines, is a sign of kowtowing to China.
So 23+ million people have to endure diplomatic isolation and face the potential threat of annexation by China because the world wants to suck up to Beijing and get more trade deals/investment, and that's ok apparently. Yet Britain is wrong to try and give the President of China a warm welcome?
I don't get it

If Cameron and Osborne had shunted China away because of human rights, the Tories would be lambasted by Labour supporters for sheer hypocrisy. If you're going to be lambasted, at least keep your options with China open.

Am no US fanboy bit you are completely wrong.
US GDP for 2014 was $17.5 tr, China miles behind on $10.5 tr.

Gets even worse on a per Capita basis which is actually the most important figure. US is $54,000, the chinese off the scale behind on $13,000.

All of this UK brown nosing of the PRC should be worth something. Maybe Dave could ask new best friend Xi if China might want to seal the engagement with a grand gesture, such as fronting the 28 billion GBP to restore Big Ben and the tower. Labor of course to be provided by Chinese craftsmen.

Doesn't hurt to ask.

If other western countries want to use racist terms like kowtowing let them. Good China-UK relations are in both countries interests and we have more in common than we have differences. Simply because a few hippies cry 'human rights' doesn't mean two of the world's largest economies should not engage with each other.

mcgill16  whoateallthelies 1h ago
In case you missed it, the Chinese are still a one party communist state, centrally planned, none of that is going to be "moving on" any time soon. Do not confuse one part of a countries economy with it's entire modus operandi.

A move to progressive socialism would require a significant move to the right.
