TOKYO —In a rare step Japan has presented an opinion to the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to rule in favor of a suit seeking the removal of a “comfort women” statue in California Foreign Ministry officials said Tuesday.

The ministry presented an amicus curiae brief to the court which is considering the legality of a decision by the city of Glendale to allow the erection of the statue which symbolizes women who were forced to work in wartime Japanese brothels.

The move comes as Tokyo and Seoul are embroiled in a diplomatic spat over similar statues in South Korea. The Glendale statue depicts a young woman in traditional Korean dress.

Through submission of the brief Japan hopes to articulate its stance on the sensitive historical issue abroad the ministry officials said.

It seems desperately pathetic considering how badly they lost last time. The appeals court rightly pointed out that there are countless local memorials and plaques dedicated to the holocaust the Armenian genocide and other international tragedies in cities across the country. And most importantly for a case alleging that Glendale is interfering with the Federal Government's right to conduct foreign affairs there was no evidence that the Federal Government/State Department has said anything about it not even a peep.

The more they argue and fight the more credence they give to the issue they are so stubbornly trying to get everyone to forget.
Japan is pulling at straws on this issue and wasting a hell of a lot of money and time in the process.

I think that Japan making such an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is ridiculous. This is occurring on U.S. soil not Japan.
On the other hand one must wonder why this is being erected at this time in Glendale. Yes I know there is a very large Korean population in the L.A. area but I am a bit perplexed as to why this statue is needed there.
I think this is strange on all acounts.

Korea was paid off and agreed to shut up about this. If you want to protest you should not have accepted the hush money in 2015. Pay it back.

I used to have that reaction too. Though I condemn Japan's tortured aversion to owning up to it's past why should they and the Koreans and the Chinese wage endless PR campaigns in the West. But think of how many Holocaust Memorials there are around the world. Here's a list of just the ones in the US:

How is what took place in Europe in WWII any more relevant to the US right? But as you said there are nearly 2 million Korean Americans (and nearly as many Jews as there are in Israel). It's only natural that these communities want recognition for what many in their families suffered through. Just as it is for blacks Native Americans whose suffering was closer to home.

Many people are saying there is CIA behind these movements to divide and rule East Asis.

I cannot believe the US Supreme court is going to hear this stupid motion. I think the writer has confused the US Supreme court with the Californian Supreme court.

Of course the Californian Supreme court is going to laugh this out of court and I hope censure the Japanese Foreign Ministry for getting involved in domestic First Ammendment rights.

The Japanese look ridiculous.
