TOKYO —

The government on Thursday issued guidelines allowing high school students to participate in political activities, as Japan has lowered the voting age for national elections to 18 from 20.

The education ministry sent the new guidelines to prefectural education boards, scrapping 1969 instructions that banned high schoolers from joining demonstrations and other political gatherings outside school.

Underscoring the political neutrality of education, the new guidelines still ban such activities at schools while urging teachers to refrain from expressing personal political views in front of students.

In June, the Diet enacted legislation to lower the voting age in an attempt to encourage political participation by young people.

The change will take effect from June 19 and is expected to apply to next summer’s upper house election.

No education is politically neutral, but especially not Japan's.

Ohoh, guess I screwed up a couple of times!
Got to be careful from now on when talking about the Japanese leadership in front of my junior high school students!
"....refrain from expressing personal political views in front of students."
So how can I teach them the "good and the bad"?? But on the other hand, since I am not a "real regular" teacher, maybe I shouldn't worry too much.

Guess that will foil young Yamada's plans to wear his ABE SUX T-shirt to school next week.

Riiiiigggghhhhhttttt..........
And how is this going to be enforced at every school in Japan? Bulltish. the majority of the kids in my classroom disapprove of their leader. 29 out of 37 do anyway. it was an answer to a lesson about giving opinions.
also, they are 1st year jh kids so there ya go. I remained neutral. They expressed that all by demselves yo
