NAGASAKI —Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force stepped up preparations Monday toward creating a force like the U.S. Marine Corps by putting in place a new unit that will offer training to members of the envisioned brigade.

The GSDF amphibious brigade to be launched at the end of the next fiscal year through March 2018 will be tasked with countering possible attacks on Japanese islands that stretch southwest from Kyushu to Taiwan as the country faces China’s growing maritime assertiveness.

Only offensive to China and the brainwashed Korean element. But then anything is offensive and a return to WWII militarism. The key here is "having to retake a Japanese island" as opposed to "taking some other country's island". .

Our neighbors do not have to worry about Japan with this. Japanese people are not as they used to be. They have become boneless to say nothing of JSDF. No comparison with brave U.S. Marines.

I expect every country would want a highly trained hold-your-ground at any cost professional force like the US Marines. I thought most countries had this. Needed for embassy protection at a minimum but able to perform all sorts of other tasks.
Hopefully the politicians can keep this new force from any violent actions through diplomacy but without the threat of violence many leaders won't listen at the table.

Seeing as Japan is made up of thousands of islands this is a no brainer. Developing an elite Marine force would help support the US Marines in any defense of Japan as well as make invading Japan a nightmare for any hostile power

The Japanese have not become "boneless" but simply have become wiser after having suffered catastrophic losses because of their rulers' fatal addiction to a militaristic culture. Ordinary Japanese (cannon fodder) were once brainwashed and coerced into carrying out the Japanese government's grandiose and delusional dreams of empire so "once bitten twice shy" the people of Japan are today thankfully much more capable of seeing through any attempt to enlist them for another policy of military aggression which is why Abe's spending on his dream of militarizing Japan into a "normal country" (like the USA?) can only have a limited appeal to voters.

A couple of days ago China announced they would increase the size of their Marine Corps equivalent from 20000 to 100000. Now Japan goes from 0 to 2000. Japan has to up its game.
