Evolution will nolonger be taught in Turkish schools, a senior education official has said, in amove likely to raise the ire of the country’s secular opposition.

一名教育部门高级官员说，土耳其学校将不再教授学生进化论，此举可能会激起土耳其国内世俗派反对者的怒火。

Alpaslan Durmuş, who chairs the board ofeducation, said evolution was debatable, controversial and too complicated forstudents.

“We believe that these subjects are beyond their [students] comprehension,”said Durmuş in a video publishedon the education ministry’s website.

Durmuş said a chapter on evolution wasbeing removed from ninth grade biology course books, and the subject postponedto the undergraduate period. Another change to the curriculum may reduce theamount of time that students spend studying the legacy of secularism.

Critics of the government believe publiclife is being increasingly stripped of the secular traditions instilled by thenation’s founder, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk.

Still, evolution is brieflytaught in many high school biology courses in the region.

The subject of evolution in particular stirred debate earlier this year afterNuman Kurtulmuş, the deputy prime minister, described theprocess as a theory that was both archaic and lacking sufficient evidence.

Durmuşsaid that a greater emphasis would be placed on the contributions of Muslim andTurkish scientists and history classes would move away from a “Euro-centric”approach.
