Cult Chinese dating show If You Are the One has put a call out for 28 Australian lonely hearts to travel to Nanjing to be a part of a new series when it starts filming.

Prospective lovebirds should not expect a translator, however. Entrants must be at least 22 year old with Australian residency and fluent Mandarin, so they can “comprehend the language without difficulty”.

Succumbing to a curiosity for obscure reality-show castoffs from the mainstream channels,I briefly watched an episode some time ago hoping for a sort of matrimonial version of the Iron Chef.However,it proved to be a disappointment,the sort of bland fare that I suspect had to pass through several levels of approval from the Party's Central Committee before it was given permission to be broadcast.In fact,it wouldn't surprise me if the authoritarian Chairman Meng has been appointed by the Party to make sure things don't get out of hand.

Contestants must have fluent Mandarin - yes, there are plenty of people who are not of Chinese descent in Australia who can claim that. This program is aimed almost exclusively at Chinese Australians, it is not a call for Australian lonely hearts at all. Headline fraud. If Bulgaria had a show and you had to speak Bulgarian, I dont think you could say the show was aimed at "Australians." Anyway best of luck to all contestants. I wonder if Kevin Rudd will do a guest spot.

This is wrong. The awful Australian show Taken Out provided the inspiration for the UK show.

Good on Grandfather Meng! Great show and a better insight into Chinese society than anything I have seen on Foreign Correspondent lately.
I like how they win a trip to the Aegean and some skin products, and when it started it was only a pair of fashion shoes - so sweet!

Agreed Jacqueline and the headline was a fraud anyway. Needing to speak a language which I am guessing 5 per cent of people speak, means the show is not aimed at Australians in general. Despite what the headline says

Me, my son and my husband are huge fans of this show, and we sit down at least three times a week en famille to watch. This will be exciting to see, but I would like to point out that there have been some Australians on the show before, and the ladies made it clear they were not burning to move here.

I love this show too, and I just discovered I am part of a cult following. The strange thing is, I am the only non-Chinese in my family, and the only one who watches it. I use it to practice my Chinese comprehension, but it is also a good way to understand Chinese society. The girls are not all obsessed with money but they invariably ask if the man will help look after her parents. We never hear a word about parents in these types of shows in the West. Someone said the Chinese girls prefer Western men. Also untrue. Several times girls rejected a Western Chinese speaker because they said they wanted a Chinese bloke.

我也喜欢这个节目。奇怪的是在我家里，只有我不是中国人，而喜欢看这个节目就只有我而已。我看这个节目是为了锻炼我的中文，但是也能通过这个节目了解到中国社会。这些女嘉宾并非都迷恋金钱，但是她们都不约而同的询问男嘉宾是否愿意照顾她们的父母。而在西方的同类型节目中，父母从来就不会被提及。有人说中国女孩更喜欢西方男人，这种说法也是不真实的。好几次女嘉宾们都拒绝了会讲中文的西方人，因为她们说她们想要个中国男人。
